Martin Treiber (125303552) Suggested edit: Hawarden Independent May 1, 1930 Born: 2-27-1881 Died: 4-24-1930 Martin Treiber, long a prominent farmer of their community, died very suddenly at his home, three miles north of Hawarden, about 12:45 o'clock last Thursday afternoon from a heart attack. He had not been in the best of health for a number of years. Some three years ago he was confined to his bed for several weeks with heart trouble. His condition, however, seemed to have improved considerably during the last year or two. Last Thursday morning he was about his work as usual and had not complained of feeling ill. He came to town in the morning with his regular daily milk delivery for the creamery and returned home about 10 o'clock with a load of cement in his trailer. He spent the balance of the forenoon at work in his cattle barn, which he was engaged in remodeling. At noon he partook of a hearty dinner and with members of his family, was listening to the radio after dinner when he suddenly collapsed. A physician and also a pastor were called immediately after the attack, but life was already extinct when they arrived and it is believed that his death was instantaneous. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and 2:30 at Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. George Steinkamp. Internment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. The funeral was one of the most largely attended of any ever held in Hawarden and the wealth of floral tributes attested to the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors. Martin Treiber was born at Mannheim, Baden, Germany, Feb. 27, 1881, and died April 24, 1930, at the age of 49 years, 1 month and 27 days. At the age of two years he came to America with his parents and they settled in Illinois. The family moved to Sioux county in 1885. His mother died in 1899 and his father passed away five years later. On Jan. 16, 1907, he was united in marriage with Ella Degen of Ireton. This union was blessed eight, one of whom, a daughter, Emma, died in infancy. He is survived by his sorrowing widow and seven children, Mrs. Robert Storm of Storm Lake, and Florence, Velda, Viola, Raymond,, Harold and Dona May, the latter only had 2 years of age. He also leaves five brothers, Philip, Peter, John, William and George and two sisters. Mrs. Carl Klumb and Mrs. Louis Wegner, all of this vicinity. Two grandchildren also survive him. Mrs. Treiber was among the best known and most progressive farmers in this vicinity. He always took a prominent part in the affairs of the community in which he resided and was strictly honorable and straight forward in all his business dealings. He was one of the organizers of the Interstate Co-Operative Creamery in Hawarden and had served as a member of its board of directors since its organization. In his death his family has lost a faithful and loving husband and father, the Lutheran church a valued member and the community an esteemed and respected citizen.
