James, Hamilton county pioneer and Civil war veteran, was held at the home Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with Rev. W. P. Hill in charge of the services. Burial was made in Aurora cemetery. Martin Whitacre James, son of John and Elizabeth James was born in Carroll county, Ohio January 5, 1845. He departed this life at his home, August 7, 1926, age 81 years 7 month and 2 days. He was left without a father at the age of eleven years, and his mother passed away five years later. He was the second oldest of a family of seven and all of them have preceded him in death, two of them having died in infancy. His father moved the family from Ohio to Illinois while the children were small. In February 1865, he enlisted in Co., D 7th. Illinois Cavalry. He was with generals Hatch and Grierson in their raids and was honorably discharged from the service of his country in November 1865. He was united in marriage to Martha A. Brown, of Knox Co., Ill., on February 22, 1866. Three children were born to this union. C. D. James of Venango, Nebr.; Lottie E. and J. H. both deceased. There were five grandchildren, one died in infancy. The grandchildren are as follows: Leslie J. Alter of Lewistown, Mon.; son of Lottie E. Alter; Cecil C. James, Cora M. Nelson and Clifford M. James, children of John H. James. There are three great grandchildren. He came to Hamilton county, Nebr., in the spring of 1884 and farmed until the spring of 1906, when he moved to Aurora, where he has reside since. He confessed his savior while a youth. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, one son, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. James celebrated their 60th. wedding anniversary February 22nd of this year.
