James occurred at the Aurora home last Friday, she having passed her 85th. birthday. Mrs. James had long been a resident of the community and her circle of friends was widely extended. She was the widow of the late Martin W. James, a veteran of the Civil war and one of the early residents of this community. For many years, and during the active period of her life, she had a large part in the activities of the Woman's Relief Corps, other patriotic organizations and in the church. Mrs. James was the daughter of Henry and Ann Maria Brown and was born in Franklin county, Indiana, September 9, 1847, being at the time of her death 85 years and 21 days of age. She was the oldest of a family of six, two daughters and four sons. The sister and the brothers all preceded her in death. When a small child she went with her parents to Knox county, Illinois. There she lived to the age of womanhood and until her marriage to Martin W. James, February 22, 1866. She united with the Church of Christ in 1865 and continued the christian life until the end. Mr. and Mrs. James moved to Page county, Iowa, in 1872 and to Hamilton county in 1884. This was the home of both until the time of their death, excepting for a period of time during which Mrs. James made her home at the soldiers and sailors home at Burkett. Mrs. James was the mother of one daughter and two sons, the only survivor being the son, Charles D. There are four grand-children, one great grand-daughter and two great grand-sons. In a statement shortly prior to her death and in her own handwriting, Mrs. James said: "I made the good confession at sixteen and one-half years and united with the Church of Christ. My motto has been to abstain from every appearance of evil. I am like Paul--I know in whom I have believed. I think him able to keep that which I have committed against that day, I am waiting when he is ready for me." The funeral services were held from the Yost and Vogt funeral home Monday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. B. Frank Lowrey of Davenport, Nebraska and burial was in the Aurora cemetery.
