The Centerville Daily Iowegian and Citizen Monday, May 11, 1953 Flower Box Falls, Kills Marvin Bear Bitter tragedy struck Saturday noon at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bear, a short distance northwest of Cincinnati. Their small son, Marvin David, was crushed to death beneath a heavy window box that was across the sill of the large front window of the farm house. CLEANING HOUSE Mrs. Bear was busy cleaning house and Marvin, who would have been three years of age August 15, was playing in the front yard. It was noon and Mr. Bear came in from the field. Marvin was called to dinner but did not respond. His father went to look for him and found that the child had apparently sought to climb onto a large flower box at the front farmhouse window. The box had tipped and fallen with Marvin beneath it. The box struck him across the chest and apparently killed him almost instantly. However, the father and mother rushed their son to St. Joseph's hospital in Centerville, but there was nothing that could be done. The tragedy, so unexpected and so unbelievable, stunned the father and mother and deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends and relatives was extended to them this weekend. NEARLY THREE Marvin was two years, eight months, and 24 days of age. He had a sister, Cathy Deanne, 4-1/2, and a baby brother Michael Alan, one year. In addition to his parents, Marvin also leaves his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Maybelle Beer, who resided on the farm with her son-in-law and daughter, and parental grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Bear, of near Piano. The mother was formerly Alice Catherine Beer, prior to her marriage to Dean Bear, and was a former member of the Daily Iowegian staff. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Grace Tabernacle in Centerville with Dr. Hugh Sawyers officiating and burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery at Cincinnati.
