Marvin Dean Bear was born October 7, 1924, at home in Wayne County, IA to James and Almeda (Printy) Bear. He served three years in the U.S. Navy. He married Alice Catherine Beer July 16, 1946. Over the years, Dean was employed in farming, managing the O'Neil Dairy Farm north of Ames from 1957 to 1960, and then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in road maintenance. At the time of his retirement in 1988, Dean was the mailroom supervisor for the Iowa State University Library for 16 years. He enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Marvin David; first wife, Alice; second wife, Marlene; his parents; 2 brothers, Kermit and Allen; and a daughter-in-law, Dorothy. He is survived by a daughter, Cathie (David) Rocke, of Gilbert; son, Michael (Cindy) Bear of Newton; two grandsons, Ian (Naomi) Rocke of Dubuque and Matthew Bear of Portland, OR; two granddaughters, Deanne (Jamie) Schweitzer of Portland, OR and Christina Bear of Ames; two great grandchildren; and a sister, Marietta (Eudean) Lord of Promise City, IA. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Isreal Family Hospice House or the Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission.
