Popken, 79, of Fremont went home peacefully to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at Nye Legacy in Fremont. Marvin was born on June 7, 1934, to John and Julia (Neels) Popken of rural Hooper. He received his education in Hooper. Following school, he farmed with his father. He married Elsie C. Luebbert on May 16, 1956, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in West Point. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1956, and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. After his discharge, Marvin worked in the shipping department at George A. Hormel Co., in Fremont, retiring after 30 years of service. He and Elsie purchased a farm south of Fremont in 1963 which he farmed until his retirement in 2011. Marvin's love of his life, Elsie, his family and grandchildren will miss him deeply. He was a devoted husband and father, who was committed to a life of hard work and perseverance in order to give the best he could to his family. He succeeded in that and fulfilled his dream of leaving behind a Godly heritage to his children. His simple faith and life exalted the Lord through his lifestyle of integrity and honor as he put God first in all. His passions in life were first and foremost his wife and family, but especially his grandchildren. He was excellent at making them feel like they were the most important people in the world, and to Grandpa they were. Marvin's hobbies were very simple. He loved to farm, spend time with his grandkids, have his country fried steak at Farmer Brown's Restaurant and to give to numerous mission trips and Christian organizations that have reached an untold amount of people with the Gospel and love of Jesus Christ. He leaves behind a legacy of love for all who were touched by his life. Survivors include: Elsie, his wife of 57 years; five children, Kathleen (and husband, Cliff) Grant of Stanwood, Wash., Karen (and husband, Bob) Birdwell of Lincoln, Kenneth (and wife, Helen) Popken of Seoul, South Korea, Kevin (and wife, Zoryana) Popken of Fremont and Kristeen (and husband, Casey) Mitchell of Fremont; a sister, Betty Glodowski of Hooper; and grandchildren, Jess, Wade and Luke Grant, Ryan, Taylor and Grant Birdwell, and John, Grace, Samuel, Caleb and Benjamin Popken. He was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Living Word Church, 1110 N. Lincoln, Ave., Fremont. Pastors Jackie and Kenneth Hartman and Pastor Elmer Murdoch will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Moser Memorial Chapel, 2170 N. Somers Ave., Fremont, with family receiving friends from 5-6 p.m. Burial will be in Pohocco Lutheran Cemetery, south of Fremont, following the service.
