Visitation will continue at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service. Marvin F. Held was born Jan. 6, 1928, in New Salem, the son of Fred Jacob and Ruth Elizabeth (Wullschleger) Held. His maternal grandfather was a pastor at the Bethel Church, south of New Salem, and his paternal grandfather was one the founders of the church. Marvin continued that dedication and was an active member at Bethel. He was raised and educated in the area, and completed a mechanic short course in Wahpeton. He farmed with his father and married Joyce Kleih on Oct. 19, 1957, at the Peace Church. They moved to his parents' farm south of New Salem and worked on the land together, until they retired in 2004. They had moved into New Salem in 1997. Marvin served on the Bethel Church Consistory and later became a member of Peace Church in New Salem. He also served on the Credit Union Credit Committee for 21 years. Marvin was a farmer by birth and of heart, who practiced faithfully and gratefully a true stewardship of the land and animals given into his care. He and Joyce operated a diversified family farm which included dairy, range cattle and grain farming. His faith was of primary importance to him, as was the welfare of his wife, children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed repairing and keeping his equipment in top condition. In his all too rare "spare" time, Marvin enjoyed the Minnesota Twins and Vikings games. Marvin's survivors include his wife, Joyce, New Salem; his daughters and sons-in law, Marcy and Kelly Dawson, Almont, and Jeri and John Lynch, Jamestown; his sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce (Jolene), Ames, Iowa, and Brian (Sara), Mitchell, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Kruger, New Salem, and Elizabeth Held, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Vernon and Willard.
