He was awarded a purple Heart, Combat Action Medal, two Crosses of Gallantry and fifteen other awards. Gibson said, "I am simply happy to be alive and home. In one situation, I went into a village with 15 other Marines. We were attacked at night with mortar fire and then overrun. Finally helicopters came to rescue the squad, but only two of us were still alive. The other Marine lost both feet. I'm not a hero, I just did what had to be done for my country." Today, memories of Vietnam are still very painful for Gibson. He keeps a low profile, seldom talks about wartime experiences and does not attend veteran events. In his own way, though, he honors his military comrades everyday. He starts every morning by raising the American and Marine Corps flags on a tall flagpole in his front yard.}} Marvin Lee Gibson, age 61, of LaFollette died July 28 at his home. He was a retired U.S. Marine, having served in the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Edith (Henson) Gibson; brother, Stanley Gibson; sister, Helen Miller. Survivors include his sons, Mack Gibson, Eric Gibson and Marvin Lee Gibson, Jr., all of Florida; brothers, Dennis Gibson, Fla., David Gibson, Maryland; sisters, Judy Bankart, Maryland, Carolyn Andrade, Fla.; seven grandchildren. Funeral services were July 31 at Cross Chapel with Rev. Lynn Ray officiating. Interment was in the Powell Valley Cemetery with Military Honors by the Campbell County Honor Guard. Cross Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The Department of Veterans Affairs record revealed Marvin Gibson was born on June 4, 1943 and died on July 28, 2004. Marvin enlisted in the Marine Corps. on June 20, 1960 and was released on December 13, 1980. SSDI (Social Security Death Index) issued in Maryland in 1958, revealed Marvin L. Gibson was born on June 4, 1943, resided at 37766 La Follette, Campbell County, Tennessee and died on July 28, 2004. U.S. Veterans Gravesites record revealed Marvin L. Gibson was born on June 4, 1943, served as a GY SGT in the US Marine Corps in Vietnam and died on July 28, 2004. He was buried in Powell Valley Cemetery in La Follette, Campbell County Tennessee. Marvin lived to age 61.
