Description	:	Marvin Lee Gies was born April 28, 1936, to George and Margareate (Knittel) Gies along with his twin sister, Margaret (Gies) Baker at their parents home known as the railroad section house in Herrick, SD. Read More	Marvin Lee Gies was born April 28, 1936, to George and Margareate (Knittel) Gies along with his twin sister, Margaret (Gies) Baker at their parents home known as the railroad section house in Herrick, SD. The twins were the youngest of eight children. Marvin attended school in Herrick and went on to graduate high school in Burke, SD in 1955. Later in August that year, Marvin enlisted in the United States Army for three years and spent 30 of those months in Okinawa as a military police. Marvin returned home to marry his long time sweetheart Carole Ann Jons on October 24, 1958. To this union were born their children: Laurie, Lisa and Dan. They moved to Sand Springs, OK, where they lived for four years and then moved back to South Dakota. Marvin then went on to Southern State College in Springfield, SD, where he received his degree in body and fender repair. He then moved to Gregory, SD, to work for Iden Body Shop and later hired as a part-time sub clerk at the Gregory Post Office. Since this was a part-time job, Marvin built a body repair shop behind his home which became Marv's Body Shop. Marvin later became Postmaster at the Gregory Post Office and the last two years of his postal career he became Postmaster at the Winner Post Office. Marvin then retired from the postal career and then later became the Veteran Service Officer for Gregory County. He always said that this was his most rewarding job helping veterans getting their benefits and medical needs. Marvin spent several years driving the ROCS transit van that provided local transportation in which he retired from that job at the age of 82. Marvin along with his dear wife Carole spent a year working full-time helping build the St. John Lutheran Church. If you look around the church there are a lot of things you can see that were made by him, the cross on the wall by the keyboard, the two crosses to hang banners, the banner rack in the storage room, the symbol on the overhead lights and one of the memorial boards. Marvin enjoyed taking his children on camping trips, vacations, fishing and hunting. He also spent many years running the chains at the home football games with his good friend Clarence Ehnes, umpired many baseball and softball games, and was the girls softball coach while his girls were growing up. Marvin was an outstanding active member of his community where he and his wife Carole volunteered for many functions. Later in their married life Marvin became a full time loving and devoted caregiver to his wife Carole. Marvin provided unconditional love during Carole's battle with Alzheimers. After a brief illness, Marvin passed away surrounded by his loving family at the at the Avera Gregory hospital on Aug 12, 2021. Marvin is survived by his wife Carole, twin sister Margaret (Glen) Baker of Fairfax, his children Laurie (Don) Stukel, Lisa Lien, Dan (Kristy) Gies, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his special friend Deloris Musilek Marvin was preceded in death by his parents George and Margareate Gies, his brothers George, Walter, Arthur, Raymond, and Melvin, his sister Fredrika, and son-in-law Gregg Lien. * * * * * * * * * * * * Funeral services for Marvin Gies, of Gregory, SD, were held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory with Pastor Marcus Ring officiating. A visitation and prayer service were held Tuesday evening at the church with Pastor Clark Gies officiating. Music was provided by Melanie Hannahs, organist. Congregational hymns were "Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus," "The Lord is My Shepherd I'll Not Want," and "Rock of Ages." Darlene Horst was in charge of registration. Casket Bearers Aaron Lien, Kariann Lien, Dustin Stukel, Emily Stukel, Lindsay (Jesse) Huser, Jordan (Cassie) Gies, and Lexy (Zach) Dickerson. Honorary Casket Bearers were the entire Gregory community that Marv was so fond of. Military honors were presented by the Herrick American Legion and the National Honors Team.
