He died July 23, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Groton. Marvin Mehlhaff, son of Christoph and Emma (Hoff) Mehlhaff, was born Oct. 29, 1925, in McPherson County, near Leola, S.D. He attended country school through the eighth grade after which he assisted his parents on the family farm. He joined the United States Army in February 1945 during World War II, where he rode in the horse mounted Calvary and was later stationed in the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged in December 1946. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Knapp in 1947 in Leola. They farmed in that area, later moving to Aberdeen, S.D. He was then united in marriage to JoAnn Huwe in 1967 in Webster, S.D. Together, they had six children. Marv worked in construction, as a salesman, business owner and ended his working career doing what he loved, which was riding horseback at Diamond F Cattle Company. He enjoyed family, friends, socializing and being around animals. He especially enjoyed anything to do with horses. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Lisa West) Mehlhaff, of Tijeras, N.M., and Chris (Wendy) Mehlhaff, of Westport, S.D.; three daughters, Barb (Gene) Diekmann, of Lakewood, Colo., Marva (Scott Schuna) Mehlhaff, of St. Paul, Minn., and Pam (Dillon) Cutler, of Frederick, S.D.; one daughter-in-law, Sally Mehlhaff, of Groton; two sisters, Ella Heinz, of Ipswich, S.D., and Edna Hottman, of Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. His parents; one son, Randy (2008); and three sisters, Adeline Kirnan, Viola Adams and Anne Garman preceded him in death. Casketbearers will be Greg Kirnan, Larry Kirnan, Peter Frank, Tom Gunther, Terry Heinz and Melvin Heinz.
