Description	:	Mary A. Hawk was born September 4, 1838, in Northampton, Morrow County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of David Hawk and Mary Thrice Gall. (Mother's maiden name on death certificate not entirely clear.) Mary married Daniel Austin Huston on July 20, 1857, in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Cora Dell Huston (1870-1871) 6. Nellie Arvilla (Huston) Austin (1871-1959) In addition to their biological children, Mary and Daniel took in and raised as one of their own children: 7. Edward Franklin Marcellus (1856-1895). Edward was an orphan from New York who traveled on one of the Orphan Trains out west. He was engaged to Mary and Daniel's oldest daughter Emma Luella at the time of her death. Mary and Daniel left Pennsylvania and first moved to Missouri before moving to just north of Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, and then finally moving to Lafayette Township, Nemaha County Nebraska. In addition to farming, Daniel also did freighting work. Daniel died of typhoid fever on August 21, 1902, in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska. Mary was sick at the time of Daniel's death but recovered. She died March 26, 1924, in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska. The following is transcribed from the Nemaha County Herald April 4, 1924: BROCK PIONEER LAYS DOWN LIFE'S HEAVY BURDEN Mrs. Mary Huston, a Pioneer of Brock Lady Died Last Wednesday - Her Home Menaced by Indians in Early Days. Mrs. Mary Huston laid down life's burdens March 26, 1924 at the age 85 years, 6 months and 22 days. Miss May Hawk was born September 4, 1838 at Northampton, Morrow county, Pa. After reaching the age of twelve years she lived with an older sister until her marriage to Daniel Huston, July 20, 1857, at Wilkesbarra, Pa. Six children were born to them, four daughters and two sons. Mr. and Mrs. Huston came to Nebraska in 1857, settling north of Nebraska City, where they lived several years, later moving to this vicinity and living on a farm north of Brock for many years. In the early pioneer days they underwent many hardships, as Mr. Huston did freighting across the plains, and Mrs. Huston was left at home to care for the family of small children, she was frightened many times by the roving bands of Indians. After many years of hard work on the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Huston rented their land and moved to Brock. Mr. Huston died August 2, 1902, and after this Mrs. Huston lived alone for some time. After the death of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Huston she kept house for her son and his little daughters for some time. After he left for California four years ago she went t Nebraska City and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Austin, where she was tenderly cared for during her long illness. Besides her husband, three daughters, Hattie, Louella and Cora preceded her to the other shore, and she now leaves two sons, Frank Huston of Long Beach, Calif., C. E. Huston of Brock and Mrs. Nellie Austin of Nebraska City, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She had been a faithful member of the Methodist church for over fifty years. The funeral services were conducted at Brock, Friday at 2 p.m. by. Rev. Schenck, who paid a high tribute to the life of Mrs. Huston in his splendid sermon. Interment was made at Lafayette cemetery in the family lot. Thee were many beautiful floral offerings.
