Payne Mary Agnes Dunbar was born Aug. 6, 1844 at Steubenville, Harrison county, Ohio, and died Feb. 23, 1930, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 17 days. She was the eldest child of Joseph Dunbar. When she was still a young child, she came with her parents to Iowa and settled near Webster City. She was married to Jonathan W. Payne in the spring of 1865. Payne Mary Agnes Dunbar was born Aug. 6, 1844 at Steubenville, Harrison county, Ohio, and died Feb. 23, 1930, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 17 days. She was the eldest child of Joseph Dunbar. When she was still a young child, she came with her parents to Iowa and settled near Webster City. She was married to Jonathan W. Payne in the spring of 1865. To this union eight children were born, three sons and five daughters. Her husband, and four children preceded her in death. They were: Ilow, Viretta, Mattie and Violet. A few years after her marriage the family moved to Missouri, where they lived for four years. Then they returned to Iowa and settled in the vicinity of Stratford. Mrs. Payne had lived on the farm nearly all her life and her later years were spent at her home in Hardin township, Webster county. In September 1929 she moved with her son to Stratford. Her health failed somewhat during the last few years, but she did not become critically ill until Wednesday before her death. In spite of all that medical skill and loving care could do, her strength gradually failed until the end. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Will, of Truman, Minn., and John, of Stratford; two daughters, Mrs. George Woods, of Genoa, Neb., and Mrs. George Bradley, of Cherokee; one brother, J.M. Dunbar, of Webster City, and one sister, Mrs. William Hook, of Linwood, Calif. Nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. Aunt Mary was always of a sunny and cheerful disposition and ever look on the bright side of life. She was always ambitious and hardworking and even in spite of her advanced years she looked after her own household until a short time before her death. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was kind and helpful neighbor and her sunny countenance will be missed by a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the house Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Yeager officiating.
