Funeral services are being held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Beech Grove Christian Church in Nelson County with Rev. J. L. McKinney, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in a nearby cemetery. Mrs. Dodd was born Mary Anderson, at Rockfish Depot, Nelson county, on March 3, 1847, and was married to Alexander Dodd of the same community in 1866 the year after the close of the War Between the States. She was one of the few remaining residents of Nelson county remembering the forays of soldiers Confederate and Union in upper Nelson county and recalled clearly how a squad of Union soldiers camped near the Elk Hill estate and came into her home community on raids in search of food and horses. It was during these raids, she often liked to recall, that members of Nelson county families carried their valuables into the mountains to be hidden safely until the Union raid was ended. To the women of the households during those war years she often recalled fell the work of running the homes and farms. "We had no men folks at home at all," she told a News-Virginian reporter during an interview some years ago. "Well I remember," she added, "how our horses were hitched going to the fields to work and how the Yankees came by to take them away. They not only took our horses but our meat supplies as well." However in her heart there was no feeling of animosity towards the soldiers of the North. Looking after her children and grandchildren and her deep interest in her church, gave her other thoughts and other topics of conversation. Mrs. Dodd liked to point out that she could recall seven generations of her family, first her grandparents, then her parents, her brothers and sisters, her own children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchildren. Their total life span extended from before the American Revolution to the present. Until recent years, Mrs. Dodd remained active and occasionally visited her son, Parker Dodd, in Waynesboro. It was one of these visits that she attended movies, an entertainment which she admitted she "didn't particularly like." Her descendents include ten children as follows: Mrs. Ruth Fields, of Beech Grove; Mrs. Laura Campbell, of Beech Grove; Walter Dodd, of Alexandria; Mrs. Ella Fitzgerald, of Nash; Richard Dodd, of Afton; Rufus Dodd, of Beech Grove; Parker Dodd, of Waynesboro; Mrs. Lula Campbell of Greenville; and Benjamin Dodd, of Alexandria. Three other children preceded her to the grave, Hoy Dodd, a son, having been killed in a mine accident at Sherando when a young man, and two daughters having died in early girlhood.
