She was born on December 20, 1917, in Wenatchee, the second of Karl and Lola (Brock) Gussman's three daughters. Mary attended grade school in East Wenatchee and was in the first class to graduate from East Wenatchee grade school, which was located on the current site of East Wenatchee City Hall. Read More	Mary Neigel, longtime resident of East Wenatchee, passed away Friday October 7, 2005, at Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood, WA. She was born on December 20, 1917, in Wenatchee, the second of Karl and Lola (Brock) Gussman's three daughters. Mary attended grade school in East Wenatchee and was in the first class to graduate from East Wenatchee grade school, which was located on the current site of East Wenatchee City Hall. With no high school yet in East Wenatchee, she and her sisters walked to Wenatchee High School and back over the original black bridge, which is now part of the Apple Capitol Loop Trail. After graduation from High School, Mary ventured further from home, earning a bachelor's degree and teaching certificate from Washington State College (now Washington State University.) After teaching students nearly her own age at Manson High School for one year, she joined the Army, training to become a Physical Therapist, working on rehabilitation of soldiers returning from the war overseas. Upon returning to Wenatchee, she married her long-time sweetheart, Syl Neigel in 1948. In the mid 1950's, Mary continued her work as a Physical Therapist at Deaconess, then Rosewood and later at the current Central Washington Hospital. In the midst of the polio epidemic, she spent much of her time helping rehabilitate those crippled by polio, helping many to learn to walk again. In addition to her physical therapy work and managing a home, Mary found time for extensive volunteer work. She was active in the East Wenatchee Garden Club, Washington Federation of Flower Show Judges, Topaz - an organization that raised money to provide dental care to those unable to afford it, Physical Therapy Guild - to help equip the Physical Therapy Department, the hospital "Gift Bar" and the March of Dimes. She routinely stepped up to the plate when help was needed. In 1970, she received the Good Neighbor Orchid Award in recognition of those many years of community service. For her family, Mary was always there to help with the science fair project, sew the dance, Halloween or pep club costumes, or to be the chauffeur for numerous groups and functions. She loved to garden and was happiest with a trowel in her hand and dirt on her knees, as she nurtured that treasured first tomato of the season. Mary is survived by a sister, Virginia and brother-in-law Hugh Sprague of Seattle; two daughters, Julie Van Reenen of East Wenatchee, Jean and husband Skip Pass of Bow, WA; five grandchildren, Nicholas and wife Kendall Pass of Mount Vernon, Caitlin Pass of Redmond, Aaron Van Reenen of Bellingham, Kevin Van Reenen of Mercer Island and Mark Van Reenen of East Wenatchee; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Jaime Pass of Mount Vernon. Funeral Services will be held at Holy Apostles Catholic Church on Monday, October 17, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Inurnment Services will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catholic Family and Child Services are welcomed. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee.
