The end came peacefully and almost imperceptibly at her home on Third Avenue on Thursday, May 5th, at the ripe age of 84 years. The late Mrs. Leighton, whose maiden name was Mary Anne Arnold, was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Arnold and was the last surviving member of a family of ten brothers and sisters. She was born and spent her early life at Ivy, in the neighboring county of Simcoe, coming to Mono township at the time of her marriage about 67 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Leighton first settled on lot 8, Mono Amaranth town line, moving to what is generally known as the Leighton homestead, lot 9, Centre Road, Mono about 42 years ago. Twenty -five years ago the worthy couple retired from the labor and anxieties of farm life and came to live in Orangeville, taking up their residence in a fine home on Third Avenue, where they had since resided. The late Mrs. Leighton possessed the fine qualities of head and heart that were characteristic of the hardy pioneers who settled this district. She was industrious and courageous, strictly honest in all her intercourse with her neighbors, ready in her sympathy for those in sickness or distress, devoted to her home and family and to the church, with which she identified herself early in her married life. For many years she was a member of and a regular worshipper in Herald Angel Church, Cardwell, later transferring her membership to St. Mark's Church, Orangeville. Her loss is mourned by her aged husband, now 94 years of age, three sons, Jas. A. of Mono, Geo.. R. of MacLeod, Alta. and John J. of Toronto and five daughters, Mrs. Joseph H. Jackson, Mrs. Oliver Sproule, Mrs. W.E. Island, of Mono, Mrs. N.E. Williamson, of Toronto and Mrs. Percy Avison , of Brantford. Another daughter, Mrs. Harvey Curry of Orangeville, was called away less than a year ago. Mrs. Leighton's death also comes as a great shock to her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Hillock, aged 87 years. There was a very warm attachment between the two women, who were much together in recent years. Mrs. Leighton also leaves fifteen granddaughters, twenty-one grandsons and no less than ten great grandchildren. The funeral which was largely attended, was held from her late residence to Greenwood Cemetery on Sunday afternoon. Rev. H.A. West-McMaster, rector of St. Mark's Church had charge of the services and was assisted by Rev. W.S. Pocknell, rector of Mono West Parish. The pallbearers were six grandsons, Harvey Williamson, Fred Sproule, Arnold Leighton, Reggie Jackson, Harold Bracken and Kenneth Leighton. The following grandsons acted as the flower bearers: Arnold and Howard Avison, Lloyd Curry, Frank Jackson, Ernest Sproule and Douglas and Marshall Leighton. The floral tributes included: Gates Ajar, the daughters; wreath, daughters' children; Spray, J.J. Leighton and family; wreaths, Mrs. Jarvis, Toronto, the Jenkins family, Brantford, Mrs. Hees and Ethel, Brantford, Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe, Brantford, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Dorrance, Brantford, Mr. and Mrs. Feely, Brantford; bouquets, Mr. Harvey Curry and family, Herald Angel Church W.A., St. Mark's Church, Mrs. (Dr.) F.W. Lewis, Arnold and Florence Leighton, and Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Leighton. Friends here from outside points included: Mrs. John Carr, Mrs. Arnold Carr, Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
