JOHN DEVLIN IS GRANTED RELEASE LIFE OF PIETY AND USEFULNESS CLOSES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Mrs. John Devlin, Sr.,an old resident of the Monti community, died at her home at Kiene, Iowa, Monday afternoon, December 5th, 1934 at 2:05 o'clock after an extended illness at the age of 71 years. Mary Ann Crowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Crowe, was born in Middlefield township March 4th, 1863, and lived in that community until her marriage to John Devlin on July 25th, 1883. Since that time the home has been made in Newton township, with the exception of eight years which was spent in Canada, where they farmed a section of land. Mrs. Devlin was one of Monti's most beloved women. The ending of this kindly and helpful life was not unexpected as those dear to her have attended her with tender solicitude for several weeks, during the gradual ebbing away of a useful life. She had a capacity for friendship which drew to her scores of loyal friends who will long cherish her cheery greetings and kindly ways. Mr. and Mrs. Devlin celebrated their silver wedding anniversary at their home with friends who gathered in and two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Monti hall. Mrs. Devlin was a devout member of the Catholic church and a conscientious worker in the cause of her faith and her church. She died fortified by the last rites of the church of which she was a lifelong member. Surviving her are her husband, one sister, Mrs. Nora Coleman of Coggon, and eleven children, nine sons and two daughters: Mrs. Anna Maroney, John, Jr. William, Emmett, Arch and Raymond all of Monti; Mrs. Will Hennessey and Edward of Cedar Rapids; Joseph of Dearborn, Michigan; Clarence and Walter of Calder, Sask. Canada. Three of her sons, Bernard, Henry and Louis preceded her in death. Twenty-seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive her. The funeral was held at St. Patrick's church at Monti at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday December 5th, Rev. E.J. McDonald officiating. The mass was sung by the church choir. The spiritual bouqeuts attested to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends. The pall bearers were Martin Sheeley, Thomas Moore, W. P. Durham, John O'Brien, John Sheeley and John Smith.
