Simmons was the daughter of William Simmons (1811-1852) and Catherine (unknown) Simmons (1821-{between 1854 and 1860}). Mary married James Monroe Buchanan, son of Hiram Buchanan (1800-unknown) and Emily (Higgins) Buchanan (1800-1842), on August 10, 1854, in San Joaquin County, California; they were married until her death. The couple had seven children, two daughters and five sons, namely: Martha Jane ("Mattie") (Buchanan) [Speaker] Freshour (1858 - 1910), Alice Eleanor (Buchanan) Lamar (1859 - 1955), Hollis Albert Buchanan (1861 - 1945), William Joseph Buchanan (1862 - 1912), Josephine S.
