An 1860 Census of New York City lists a Gowan family: Timothy, age 35, Margaret, 35, with children Mary 19, Johanna 18, Mary 10, Thomas 7, Honora or Hanna 4 and James 2. All were born in Ireland except for the last 3 children, who were born in NY. Could our subject be the 19 year old? Mary married Frederick K. "Fred" Reeves in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada ca 1863. They lived in Harriston, aka Minto Township, until immigrating in 1872 or 1873 and settling in Emerick, Madison, Nebraska. Fred and Mary had 6 children, all born in Harriston except the youngest: Frances Alice Reeves Strong Edward G Reeves William Reeves* Frederick "Fred" Reeves* Mark Reeves* William Gerald Reeves *Three of their 5 sons died young. One son, William, died when he was 5 when he fell down a 75 foot well. His headstone is the oldest documented headstone in the Emerick Cemetery in Emerick, NE. Another son, Frederick, died when he was 15 when he fell under the wheels of a passing train, and their son Mark died when he was 13 from a fall from the Grant Bridge near his home. He was reportedly pushed and drowned in the creek below. On August 28, 1895, Mary's husband, Fred, was murdered by a renter of their property. Many newspaper articles document the long trial. Mary died almost 19 years later in 1914. Her attached obituary only mentions her 3 remaining children, daughter Frances, and sons Edward G. and William Gerald.
