Holmes Mrs. Thomas Holmes, one of the oldest residents of this district, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John J. Glassford, of Caledon, on Saturday, in her 88th year. Deceased was the widow of the late Thomas Holmes, who died at his home on the Mono-Caledon townline about seven years ago at a ripe age. The late Mrs. Holmes, whose maiden name was Mary Ann Jackson, was a daughter of the late George Jackson, of Adjala. She was married to Mr. Holmes, then a young farmer in Mono, on April 12th, 1851. The marriage ceremony took place in St. John's church, 7th Line, east, Mono, the officiating clergyman being Rev. J. Fletcher, then incumbent of Mono Mills parish. For some years after their marriage the young couple lived on lot 2, 4th line, east, Mono. Later they moved to what is now known as the Holmes homestead, lot 27, Con. 3, east, Caledon, where they resided until Mr. Holmes' death. Deceased was a devoted wife and a tender, loving mother, whose memory will be warmly cherished by the sons and daughters who now mourn her loss. She was highly thought of as a neighbor, being sympathetic in nature and always ready to do a kindly turn or lend a helping hand to those in trouble of any kind. She is survived by three sons and three daughters, George and Thomas Holmes, Mono; W. J. Holmes, on the home farm in Caledon; Mrs. Glassford and Mrs. Rich. Speers, Caledon, and Mrs. Thos. I. Curry, Orangeville. Wm. Jackson, Mono Mills; Alexander Jackson, and Mrs. Neil Drummond, of Adjala, are the surviving brothers and sister. There are 25 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, all of whom were present at the funeral, which was held from Mr. W. J. Holmes' residence to St. John's church cemetery, 7th Line, Mono, on Monday afternoon. Rev. A. H. Howitt was the officiating clergyman and the pallbearers were six grandsons, Edward, Jackson, Elgin, Wendell and Harold Holmes and Jackson Glassford. Among the friends from a distance were Dr. Jackson and Mr. Wendell Holmes, and Misses Maggie and Adeline Speers, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Barton, Beeton, and Mrs. E. H. Lorenz, Hanover.
