This first John Kinsey was orphaned at age 13, but later prospered owning a plantation near New Bern. On her mother's side, she was the granddaughter of John Council Bryan & Mary Ann Fulford, a wealthy planter and Revolutionary War veteran in New Bern. Mary's parents married in October 10, 1825 at the house of Asa Jones in Newbern, an influential layman of the Christ Episcopal Church congregation. At some point in her childhood she was orphaned. He mother's sister, Mary Ann Bryan, wife of Episcopal Rev. Richard Sharp Mason, took the child in and eventually adopted her, raising Mary with her own 6 children. As Rev. Mason spent most of his adult years (1840-1874) as rector Christ Church in Raleigh, Mary was virtually raised in the capital city. Mary was 19 years old when she married 24-year old William Montford Boylan Jr. of Raleigh in 1846. Boylan was the only surviving son of wealth planter and newspaperman William Montford Boylan, Sr., and was throughout their marriage, one of the wealthiest men in Raliegh. The couple would become parents of 4 known children: Elizabeth "Betsy" McCulloch Boylan (1847-1921), Mary Alice Boylan (1850-1890), William Boylan III (1852-1915), and James Boylan (c. 1854-aft 1870). In 1858, her husband commissioned architect William Percival to design his residence and legacy, "Montford Hall" (photo shown here), where Mary Kinsey Boylan presided over for the next 40 plus years. Mary was widowed in 1899 when her husband of 53 years passed in 1899 at age 77. Mary survived him just two years, passing in 1901 at age 74. In 1907, the land around "Montfort Hall" was sold and subdivided as Boylan Heights, one of the city's first planned suburban neighborhoods. "Montfort Hall" subsequently passed through a succession of owners. Despite the addition of a wrap-around porch and frame additions early in the 20th century, the building retained much of its original character. New owners in the 1980s returned the exterior of the building to its original appearance. As for Mary's children, they all married. Betsy Boylan married George Haywood Snow, a Raleigh attorney; Mary Alice married Joseph Allen Haywood, planter; and William Boylan, who managed family land and married Laura Placide Engelhard; and James Boylan, a Raleigh merchant who married Margaret Tucker.
