Description	:	William Boylan was born 1852 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, the 3rd of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to the wealthy William Montford Boylan Jr. his wife, Mary Kinsey. He grew up in the family estate "Montford Hall," (shown here) built by his father. Read More	William Boylan was born 1852 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, the 3rd of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to the wealthy William Montford Boylan Jr. his wife, Mary Kinsey. He grew up in the family estate "Montford Hall," (shown here) built by his father. He was the paternal grandson of William Montford Boylan Sr. & Elizabeth Stokes McCulloch who came to Raleigh from Pluckemin, New Jersey in 1799 where he became one of the wealthiest landowners, newspaper editors, and businessman in the area. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandchild of John G. Kinsey & Alice Bryan of New Bern, Craven County, but was also related to Mary Ann Bryan (Alice's sister) and the Rev. Richard Sharp Mason, who adopted their orphaned niece and his mother, Mary Kinsey. William was about 33 years old when he married 27-year old Laura Placide Englehard in about 1885. The couple resided in Raleigh where William managed some of the family farms and later worked for the telephone company. The couple would have 3 known children: William James Boylan (1886-1906), Josephine Boylan (1888-1919) and Joseph Englehard Boylan(1890-1891). His marriage and life were plagued by the death of his loved ones, which must have caused him untold grief. His youngest child, Joseph, died in infancy in 1881. His sister, Mary Alice Boylan Haywood, died 9 years later in 1890; and the following year, 1891, his lovely wife would die at about age 32, leaving him a widower with 2 surviving children. His father died 8 years later in 1899, followed by his mother in 1901. His youngest brother died next in 1905. He would bury his eldest son, William, the next year in 1906. By 1910, William had moved in with his only surviving sister, Besty Boylan Snow, who was herself a widow; and they resided on Boylan Avenue in Raleigh with William's only surviving child, Josephine. William Boylan died in 1915 at age 62. His only surviving child, Josephine, who had married Unknown Van Patten ca. 1910-1915, died 4 years later in 1919 at age 30. When William Boylan died on February 6, 1915, he was the last direct male descendant to carry the BOYLAN name in Raleigh, and thus ended 3 generations of Boylans who gave so much to the capital city. Following the death of his mother in 1901, the 4 children of William M. Boylan Jr. & Mary A. Kinsey inherited "Montford Hall" and the surrounding estates. In 1907, however, the land around "Montfort Hall" was sold and subdivided as Boylan Heights, one of the city's first planned suburban neighborhoods, so the name Boylan is remembered today as people pass through this fine neighborhood and the street that bears the Boylan name. Today, "Montfort Hall", located at 308 South Boylan Ave. in the Boylan Heights Historic District of Raleigh, is on the National Register of historic homes. It is a private residence and is not open to the public. His older sister, Betsy Boylan Snow, was the last surviving child of William M. Boylan Jr. & Mary A. Kinsey. She died in 1921 at age 73.
