Description	:	Mary Ann Lutes was the daughter of farmer Henry Lutes (1786-1864) and Elizabeth Cripps (1783-1861). They too are buried in the Fairmont Churchyard. She married Oliver Gray about whom little is known in 1834. He is listed on the marriage record as Alvah Gray. The couple are listed on the marriage certificates of their two daughters, both in Tewksbury. Oliver Gray may have immigrated from Scotland in 1832--an Oliver Gray is listed on the passenger list of the Camillus as a "gentleman." He was likely dead by 1849. In 1851 she sued Thomas Applegate of Readington, Hunterdon County in the Hunterdon County Circuit Court. She was seeking pay from 1849 for work as a housekeeper and an additional payment of $300 for "the price and value of other work...and materials then and there for the same provided" and "the price of goods then and there sold and delivered." This supports the idea that her husband was dead by 1849. In the January 1937 edition of "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey," the graves in the Churchyard are listed. They included: "Gray, Oliver; wife Mary Ann, D. Sept 23, 1867, aged 59.6.3" They said "The asterisk () indicates that no stone was found for that individual, his name and relationship appearing without dates on the stone of a member of his family." This seems to say that there was an existing stone for her in 1937 that listed her as the wife of Oliver Gray. Is there now a stone for Mary Ann Lutes Gray? There are for her parents. It may be that it was there in 1937 but it is gone or unreadable now. She had two known daughters: * Margaret L. Gray Hoover (1835-1913) who married Serring Hoover, son of Lewis Hoover and Catharine Fleming Beam Hoover, and is buried at Fairmount Cemetery. * Rebecca Ann Gray Beam (1839-1905) who married Henry P. Beam, son of Bartholomew (Bartrum) Beam and Mary Fleming, and moved to Illinois. Mary Ann remarried Morris F. Lunger on 17 March 1853 and they were listed with her parents in the 1860 Census. She was buried under the name of her first husband.
