Mae was the youngest of 10 children born at 506 Cedar on May 26, 1899, to George and Marie (Malich) Barich, an early Anaconda pioneer family. Her Austrian father is credited with being instrumental in bringing St. Peter's Catholic Church to Anaconda. She attended St. Paul's Catholic Grade School, Anaconda Junior and Anaconda Senior High. At 18, Mae married William E. Gallagher, a young smelter worker and the love of her life. Mae lived a full illustrious life. Gram Gallagher was always the same. During the Anaconda company's up and downs, she learned to make due and her family never went without. Her life was simple, simple and beautiful. She was frugal, frugal and striking. Throughout her 105-plus years, she sampled many things. Ask her if she wanted chocolate or vanilla or cake or pie she chose a sliver of each. "A sliver here a sliver there," she loved to declare. Life in moderation was Great Gram's calling card. Gram was always in control, modest and unassuming. It seems "nothing to excess" was a motto this woman learned to live by. Time and again her life has been characterized as "extraordinary" yet she viewed herself as an ordinary woman. Not many have been as humble, unassuming, nor accepting of the inevitable in life as great-grandmother. She lived a complete fulfilling, giving life and taught much to those she knew and a variety of her acquaintances. Hers was a continual redoing, re-fixing, repeating, reheating, revising, renewing. Never, not once, do we recall Mom wasting nor discarding something of value, nor doing away with something. Sample this, sample that, keep this, repair that, make the best of this, revamp that. Contemplating her extended life it makes us all quite modest. Gram's joys were countless. First and foremost she was in love with her creator. "God has been very good to me," she was fond of saying, "just look at all I've started." Her family and extended family brought her much happiness as did religion and the Catholic Church. Uncomplicated, down-to-earth, undemanding "little things" like having her picture taken with a couple of the "Great Greats" as she called her great-great-grandchildren brought radiance to this lovely lady. Or gazing out the east window of her nursing home at one of those "magnificent Anaconda sunrises" could cause a delightful demeanor in Gram for a week. Her life was simple, holy, uncluttered and wholesome. The important things in her life were home, family, religion. She continually worked at improving on them knowing full well everything else would then just kind of take care of itself. "Just kind of fall into place," she was fond of saying and making decisions without regret. People were amazed when Mae would relate how she has lived here 105 years in the same town in the same state year after year, without moving more than six or eight square blocks in a lifetime. During her lengthy time in Anaconda, she lived between Cedar Street and Hickory Street with the exception of 26 years "at the Manor" as well as a couple of years at New Horizons and few months "at the rest home" as she so delightfully loved to declare. Her love for Anaconda and its lifestyle never did falter. Her life was replete with the principle of appropriateness, doing those special "little" things only special people understand such as: praying the Rosary daily, sending birthday, anniversary and special cards to each and every family member and never missing a date, listening — really listening— to nearly everyone for most anything, having established numerous good friends by being a good friend, loving and looking at relationships as they really are, accepting nearly everything yet standing firm on "a few important principles," continually putting the other person first, accepting people as they are, and from time to time, overlooking most everyone's shortcomings and human frailties, as well as, playing Historical Anaconda Trivia from the turn of the century to modern times. Over her 105 years this "extraordinary ordinary" woman taught many of us to have faith in God and in ourselves; that true worth is in being; to be secure in what we do and what we have; to be strong, directed, and unusually principled people; how to age gracefully; that humility is the beginning of wisdom; learning is a process of understanding; nothing is so sacred as honor; nothing is so loyal as love; how to shine brightly from within; how to set boundaries and to say no; but most importantly, what it means to have faith and hope and trust. Surviving relatives include her daughter Marie Riley of Vancouver, Wash; grandchildren: Bill (Ellen)Gallagher, Anaconda; Deanna (Chris) Jacobs, Vancouver, Wash.; Dick (Marilyn) Riley, Vancouver, Wash.; Bob ( Judy) Gallagher, Lost Creek; Tim Gallagher, Georgetown Lake; Nancy Gallagher-Maes, Helena.; and Lynn Riley-Mahle, Vancouver, Wash. In addition she leaves 22 great-grandchildren: Mike, Billy, Pat Gallagher; Bob, Dan, Terri, Kathy, John, Lisa, Jim, Tricia, Christy Gallagher; Jake, Josh, Jeff, Justin Maes; Matt, Megan Jacobs; Kerry, Kevin Riley, Maura, Tara Mahle; and nine great-great-grandchildren: Jack, McKenzie Gallagher; Kiernan, Scan Gallagher; Brendan Gallagher; Rett Gallagher; Anthony Gallagher; Dylan McDonnough; Cole Jones. Mae was preceded in death by her parents, all other brothers and sisters, her husband William E. Gallagher in 1969, her son William E. Gallagher Jr. and his wife Monida, as well as son-in-law Joseph T. Riley and granddaughter Theresa Ann Gallagher. Cremation has taken place. No wake nor visitation will be held. Services will be conducted Tuesday at Holy Family Church starting at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer service, followed by a Funeral Mass Of Celebration at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church with internment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to The Discovery House, Anaconda Pintlar Hospice or the donor's choice. It's quite certain the English Novelist Thomas Gray was probably thinking of our Grandma Mae when he wrote: "Full many a flower is born to blush unseen And waste its sweetness in the mountain air" Gram most assuredly was such a flower. "Great" most adequately has fulfilled numerous a roles in each of our lives, she's going to be missed for she has and will always be our Mae in July, in December, now in January and throughout the years!
