Read More	Mary Ann "Mollie" Bickett CINCINNATI READING EAGLE DEATH OF A SCHOLAR AFFLICTED WITH ST.VIDUS DANCE CINCINNATI, Dec 6 1883 – A case of fasting pronounced by the physicians pronounced the most remarkable on record was developed yesterday morning when Miss Mollie Bickett, daughter of the last John Bickett, the Agent of Archbishop Purcell, died at her home. No. 402 Court street. Since the 1st of last October Miss Bickett received absolutely no nourishment of any kind, and she wasted away to a mere shadow and was finally relieved by death, which had long been expected, and in her case was doubtless welcome. To the six prominent physicians in attendance upon the young lady the exact character of her affliction was a great mystery. However, it is known to be the result of cholera or St. Vitus dance, contracted by Miss Bickett while she was a pupil at the Brown County Convent about three years ago. Once of the most important and interesting features of the case is that Mollie Bickett is the first one of the large number of Sisters and scholars who were attacked simultaneously at the Brown County Convent to die. The readers will not fail to recall the time when the inmates of the convent were seized with the dreadful St. Vitus dance, and the institution was closed on that account for a considerable length of time. The affair created the greatest amount of consternation. The press not only in this city, but throughout the country teemed with accounts of it. The disease after showing itself in one of the schools, rapidly spread until in a few days the rest, and the sisters had the same symptoms. The patients presented indeed a singular sight. Some of those attacked at the commencement were worse than the others. Soon after the school closed and the girls returned to their homes, they as well as the others began to recover. But Mollie Bickett, whose tenacity of life under the circumstances was so strange and remarkable, never recovered. Miss Bickett was scarcely sixteen years of age at the time of her demise. Prior to her illness she was a pretty plump and well developed girl. She was a pronounced brunette and quite pretty. She was one of six children, ranging in age from nine to twenty-one years. Her surviving brothers and sisters are all apparently in the best of health. Returning home from the convent when taken ill, Mollie received the best medical treatment and at the end of nine months was almost well. Her languid manner departed, her face was once more wreathed with smiles, and her nerves were entirely under control. Eighteen months ago, her father, who had a great deal of trouble in the Archbishop Purcell case, died of a disease of the brain, after a protracted sickness. Mr. Bickett’s death seemed to have a great effect upon his daughter. For soon she became morose and despondent, and the symptoms of the old complaint gradually returned. Her mother noticed that she ate very little. She could not give any reason except that it hurt her to eat, and moreover, she had no appetite. As her condition continued the symptoms of the St. Vitus dance became more noticeable. She grew pale and thin, and her condition was alarmingly serious. Finally, the doctors found it necessary to inject nourishment. This, however, produced the most violent convulsions and had to be discontinued. The patient for a long time previous to October 1st took no nourishment beyond an occasional cracker or a few sips of wine or beer. She grew terribly emaciated, and it was evident she could not last much longer. It was impossible to get anything to her stomach. The nourishment taken stopped above the stomach, and was at once emitted. With several of the emissions blood came. It was utterly impossible to give the poor girl nourishment. Since the 1st of October Miss Bickett, received absolutely no nourishment whatever, and the most remarkable feature of the case is that she lived so long. The puzzled doctors expected death long before. Her emaciations was so extreme that her spinal cord could be easily felt through her abdomen. One of the physicians said that her case was one of the most remarkable in history. He was then looking over his books to ascertain. “Miss Bickett’s case is more remarkable than that of Dr. Tanner”, said the doctor “for she lived fifty-two days with absolutely no nourishment at all. It was impossible to administer anything. The convul-sions, which the symptoms of St. Vitus dance include, kept up on the patient until October. When asked as to his opinion of the case, the doctor said he hardly knew what to say, so strange were the circumstances.
