Coonan was mentioned in our last issue. Mrs. Coonan was, so far as known, in good physical condition and had planned, with her daughter, Mrs. Roy Ryan, to entertain a number of lady friends at bridge that afternoon. Her sudden death was a shock to the community and brought intense sorrow to her children and other relatives. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas church at 9:30 Friday morning. The Rev. M.J. McNerney officiated. Burial was in St. John's cemetery. Miss Mary Ann Roache was born in Elkader, Clayton county, Iowa, June 22, 1867. She was the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Roach. She came here with her parents and other members of the family in 1884. They located on a farm in the neighborhood of Fenton. She taught school for several years. On November 21, 1888, she united in marriage with W.H. Coonan of this city and they established their home here. Two sons and a daughter were born to them. All survive their parents. They are Thomas of Ashville, N.C., William of Mason City and Mrs. Roy Ryan of this city. Mr. Coonan died in 1925. Mrs. Coonan will be sadly missed in her home and by the relatives who survive her as well as in the community and by the large circle of friends. She was a woman whose manner was pleasing, and who was cordial with everyone. She was bright, witty and in social conservation was very entertaining. She was a most devoted wife and mother and took great pride in her family, never neglecting any duty that would enhance their comfort, happiness or welfare. She was the idol of all of her children. She was companionable with them and trained herself to enjoy the things in which they were most interested. Mrs. Coonan was a woman of strong character. She was a good Christian, a devout Catholic, practical, sincere and earnest in her religious practices. She was truly a good woman with no ostentation in her nature, but with sincere earnestness in all her practices. Besides her daughter and two sons, Mrs. Coonan is survived by three sisters, Mrs. James Fender of Waterloo, Mrs. Ed Kane and Mrs. C.W. Beck of this city, and two brothers, Clem Roach of Rock Rapids and Earl Roach of Tiskiliwa, Illinois, and several grandchildren. To them all the Tribune extends sincere sympathy. Out-of-town relatives who came to attend the funeral of Mrs. Will Coonan were Clem Roache, a brother, of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Lyle Thompson, Mrs. Minor Johansen and daughter of Sioux City, neices, Mrs. Carl Betchel, niece, of Dubuque, Mrs. Jim Pender, sister, of Waterloo, and Mrs. Harold Pender, Miss Opal Pender, Miss Catherine Pender, nieces, of Waterloo, Mrs. Mark Irvin, niece of Des Moines, Jim Martin, brother-in-law, of Graettinger, Ray Neary of O'maha, Mrs. John Coonan and son John of St. Paul, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Severson of Bode and Mrs. Mary O'Halloran, niece of Evansville, Ind., who will remain here until Christmas. Her son Franklin, and daughter, Vivian, will come for her at that time.
