She resided at 2028 Jones street. Mrs. Nicholson was active in lodge and church circles. She held membership in the Confraternity at the Cathedral of the Epiphany, Third Order of St. Francis, Good Shepherd's auxiliary, St. Monica's guild, Catholic Order of Forresters, Royal Neighbors, Silver Leaf grove of the W. O. W., and the Homesteaders. Mrs. Nicholson was born at Dubuque, July 3, 1859. She came to Sioux City in 1893. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Nicholson and Mrs. Mary Fisher, and a son, John, all of Sioux City, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Fay Schmid of Portland, Ore., and Jack Nicholson of Sioux City. The body was taken from the Larkin funeral home to the residence Thursday night where members of the Confraternity will recite the rosary at 8 o'clock tonight. The Sioux City Journal, January 10, 1941 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ann Nicholson, 2028 Jones street, who died Thursday will be held at 9 a.m. today at the Cathedral of the Epiphany. Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. M. Coghlan will celebrate requiem mass. Pallbearers will be W. H. Carrigg, Glen Planalp, W. J. Dyer, James T. Brennen, Lee O'Leary and Thomas P. Clarey. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery. The Larkin funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Mary Whalen was born in Dubuque July 3, 1859. The family moved to Emmetsburg while she was a small girl. There she married William Nicholson in 1878. The Nicholsons moved to Fort Dodge, then to Sioux City in 1893. At one time Mr. Nicholson served on the police force. Later for years he was toll collector on the Combination bridge. He died in 1921. Mrs. Nicholson was an active worker in numerous religious societies and lodges, the latter including the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Royal Neighbors, the Woodmen of the World and the Homesteaders. In 1919 she organized St. Monica's guild and was president for 11 consecutive years. In co-operation with the late Mother Gertrude she was largely instrumental in establishing St. Monica's home.
