Both her parents were early Iowa settlers. She was one of thirteen children—three girls and ten boys—of whom six survive. All were born on the parental estate near the present site of Maple. August 23rd, 1881, Mary A. Williams was united in marriage to Thomas Jefferson White, likewise of early Iowa settlers and resident of the same community. To them five children were born Ole M. and Arnold G., both married and living near; Oran T., deceased, Flossie, wife of John Sterner, of near Batavia, and Roy B., still at home. Both have lived and toiled together on the present home place for twenty-nine years, their previous residence having been on nearby farms. Industry and thrift have always marked the life of Mary Williams White. Long hours of hard work were her daily share and choice, and the long time that life hung on despite the pain of her last illness, gave final proof of an uncommon ruggedness. Her final sickness and death were a tragedy. As she was burning trash near the house March 30th, her dress caught fire, and the speedy, diligent work of the two sons, Arnold and Roy, who were near, failed to extinguish the flames. The severe burns tortured her continually for two long weeks. Then an internal abscess caused mortification to set in, which, with added pain, finally on the fifteenth day of the illness, caused her death. Loving children and friends gave every possible attention during those last sad days. There are left to feel the great vacancy, the husband, the mother, Mrs. Abigail Williams, of Eddyville, four children and seven grandchildren, one sister and five brothers and other relatives, besides her many friends. Mrs. White was a charter member of Homestead No. 98 of the Brotherhood of America Yeomen. For a number of years she was also a member of the United Brethren church. During the last night of her sickness she asked for prayer, and listened quietly to the reading of the Shepherd's Psalm, our Savior's promise of the Heavenly Home, and the words of praise sung by the white-robed throng. The funeral was held at eleven a.m. Tuesday, April l6th, from the home. The services were in charge of Rev. Allrod, of Lovilia, pastor at Edwards Chapel. Music was furnished by a choir composed of Ed Walker, Earl Dilliner, Mrs. John Brunt and Miss Leora Walker. Misses- Edith Hargesheimer and Emma Anderson also sang a duet.
