Description	:	One of the real pioneers of the Penhold district passed to her rest on Tuesday morning in the person of Mrs. Tom Hives, Sr. She was 84 and had been her usual bright cheerful self up until a few weeks ago, when she caught the flu and the strain of this illness proved too much for her. She was known and loved throughout the Penhold district, and her passing will be keenly felt. Mrs. Hives was born in Leicestershire, England, in 1853, In 1874 she was married to Mr. Tom Hives. In 1898 the eldest son of the family, Arthur, came to Penhold and homesteaded, and in 1904 the family came out from the old country and settled near him. Penhold has been the family home ever since, and from the death of her husband in 1910, Mrs. Hives has made her home with her children. She had a large family of sons and daughters in who she was keenly interested. She was a member of the Church of England, and its work was close to her heart. It was an especial pleasure to her to have one of her sons in the Anglican ministry. Eleven of her fourteen children survive, the eldest child dying in England before the family came to Canada, a son, Arthur, dying in 1910, and a daughter, Mrs. Osmond, in 1924, There are four daughters, Mrs. A.W. Walker of Victoria, Mrs. Norman Stewart of Penhold, Mrs. Stanley Stiffins of Pender Island, B.C., and Mrs. Chas. Weaver of Bristol, England. The seven sons are: Rev. Chas. F., and Alfred of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; H.W. of Vancouver, and John E., Tom Edmund and Sidney of Penhold. There are thirty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
