Coy House, and today’s story is history of the Coy family and how the house came to be in this location from its original location on La Praix Street. Proctor Forbes Coy was born June 8, 1869 in Bristol Center, Kendall, IL, to Pierce and Mary (Flanders) Coy. His brothers were Louis Irus Coy (San Bernardino Tax Collector) and John P Coy (San Bernardino Horticultural Inspector). His family move to Grinnell, Iowa in 1879; later lived for a short time in Storm Lake, and in 1878 settled in Sac County, Iowa. In 1885 Mr. Coy came to San Bernardino, right after his graduation from Odebolt High School, and for a time worked for the Santa Fe offices. He went back to Odebolt, Iowa in 1888, but the lure of the west brought him back, and he returned to Highland January 21, 1891, with his new bride Mary Bena Goreham, to whom he was married December 24, 1890. Mary was born in February of 1879 in Las Mation, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Philo and Charlotte Ada (Hill) Goreham. A son, Howard Pierce Coy, was born June 16, 1897. Howard died several years before his father, but an exact date was not found. Entering the citrus business, he owned a grove on Central Avenue, which he later sold, and bought an orchard on La Priax Street, where the couple lived for 28 years before Mr. Coy’s death January 31, 1931. Besides managing his ranch, he was associated with various business interests that gave him a side acquaintance in the San Bernardino valley and, for a short time he was in the San Bernardino National Bank. In 1909, Mr. Coy became the bookkeeper at the Highland Exchange Association. At the time of his death he was also secretary for the Highland Well Company and for the City Creek Water Company. After her husband’s death, Mary had the house moved from La Praix Street, which was just outside the town site, to the site on Palm Avenue. A newspaper article dated August 24,1934, reports, “Mary Coy Starts Moving of House to Palm Avenue, and it was in place August 30th. I imagine that Mary wished to be closer to “town” just as Cora Linville did after the death of her husband, living on Boulder Avenue, very far from town. Mary belonged to a bridge club and her name was mentioned often when these gatherings took place. After her husband died, it also appears she was taken under the wing of her friends and taken on many weekend, or longer, visits. About 1945, Mary Coy returned to Sac City, Iowa to be with family, but upon her death, January 23, 1947, her remains were returned to California.
