Funeral services were held in St. Ludger Catholic church in Creighton Tuesday morning at nine o'clock. Solemn High Mass being celebrated by Rev. Benedict Brown, O.S.B, a son of the deceased. Windolph, Creighton, Master of Ceremonies and Rev. P.L. Burke, Plainview, delivered the sermon. Rev. Ambrose Mattingley, O.S.B. of Marty, S.D. was present in the sanctuary. Burial was at Creighton beside her husband, who died twenty-nine years ago. Pallbearers were; W.J. Reefe, R.l. Clark, Joe Pruss, Anton Pruss, Frank Feefe and Russel Burch. Mary Bentz was born in Apple River, Illinois, Dec. 28, 1852 and there she spent her childhood and youth and was married there to Alonzo Brown in 1875. They lived in Iowa until 1879, when they came to Antelope county, Nebraska taking a homestead. Here they lived in a dugout and then in a sod house. Twice the roof of the sod house fee in, one of those times when she was in bed with a tiny babe. However, both were rescued unharmed. Prairie fires were a constant menace and once Mrs. Brown fought fire along for two hours and saved the home from destruction. Indian scares were frequent, though there was no real danger. Her husband was gone a great deal of the time with his work and she was left at home alone with her three small children. The family moved to Woonsocket, S.D. in the early 90's. They returned to Royal in 1910. Mr. Brown died in 1912 and since that time she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hering. Surviving are one son, Rev. Benedict Brown, O.S.B. of Aurora, Ill. and one daughter, Mrs. R.J. Hering, Royal, Nebr.; eight grandchildren. A son, Will, died several years ago. Those from out of town at the funeral were Rev. Benedict Brown, O.S.B., Aurora, Ill.; the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lily Brown and sons, Lon and Gene and daughter, Bernice and her mother, Mrs. Mary Fisher of Belle Fousch, S.D.; Helen Hering, Stephan, S.D.; Genevieve Hering, Omaha; Rev. Ambrose Mattlegley, O.S.B. and Rev. Daniel Madlon, O.S.B. of Marty, S.D.; Rev. Justin Sayder, O.S.B. of Stephan, S.D.; Mother M. Jerome, O.S.B. and Sister Mary Ann O.S.B. of Yankton, S.D. and Rev. P.L. Burke of Plainview. The funeral party, numbering twenty-four, had dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Green before returning to their homes. ...The Creighton News 11 April 1940
