Description	:	Agnes Viola Brown, daughter of Alonzo and Mary Brown, was born in a sod house near Hering's Mill north of Royal on June 19, 1883. She died at the Plainview hospital, where she had spent most of the time since last November, on June 15, four days prior to her 84th birthday. She moved to Woonsocket, S.D. in 1891 and was graduated from high school there in 1901. She died at the Plainview hospital, where she had spent most of the time since last November, on June 15, four days prior to her 84th birthday. She moved to Woonsocket, S.D. in 1891 and was graduated from high school there in 1901. Following graduation, she worked at the Woonsocket newspaper, setting type, running presses, selling subscription and writing news. She taught school in South Dakota and Nebraska for 13 years. She returned to Nebraska in 1910 to marry her childhood sweetheart, Roy J. Hering. They lived at Hering's Mill until 1929, when they moved into Royal. She had an interest in writing at an early age. Her first story was published in the Minneapolis, Minn. Journal in 1898, when she was 15. She continued to write for newspapers until her death. She supplied news to the Norfolk Daily News, WJAG, Associated Press, Omaha World Herald, WOW and WOW-TV, Lincoln Journal, Sioux City Journal, O'Neill Frontier, Neligh News and Leader, Creighton News and Orchard News. In addition to her news writing, she did other writing and took part in a variety of activities, local and otherwise. She conducted the Children's Corner for The Grail, a magazine published by the Benedictine Fathers, whose first editor and publisher was her brother, the Very Rev. Benedict G. Brown; wrote stories for a school reader, published by a Chicago, Ill. firm; sold children's stories and verses to Young Catholic Messenger and wrote verses for showers and anniversaries in the Royal area for many years. During WWII she organized the Cheerio Club in Royal, which sent monthly newsletters to men in service and was instrumental in having a memorial built in honor of the servicemen from that area. Mrs. Hering organized the first PTA in Antelope County, was Red Cross chairman during both World Wars and served as chairman for polio and other drives. She received a diploma from the Merrill School of Expression, Chicago, Ill. and won four medals in WCTU declamatory contest. Fifty years ago she organized the first elocution class in Plainview and taught dramatic and coached plays in Royal for over 50 years. She specialized in writing feature stories of pioneers of this area. She drove a Model T car to get interviews and took her own pictures. She was listed in "Who's Who Among North American Writer", "Who's Who Among Catholic Writers", "Who's Who in Nebraska" and "Anthology of Verse". She was chosen Woman of Achievement in 1947 by the Sioux City Journal-Tribune publications. Mrs. Hering is survived by three daughters, Miss Mary of Plainview; Mrs. Arthur (Helen) Meuwissen of Mt Clemens, Mich and Mrs. William (Genevieve) Holman, known professionally as Jeri Southern, singer, composer and pianist of Hollywood, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
