Muret The Winfield Daily Free Press Winfield, Kansas Wednesday, July 27, 1904 Page 8 In Memorium Miss Mary Burnett Meddock was born June 21, 1860, in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, died July 21, 1904, aged 44 years, one month. She was married June 2, 1883, to W.H. Muret at Mainevill, Warren county, Ohio, united with the Pleasant Valley M.E. church near Hackney, Kans., about 1890. The subject of this sketch had lived in this community about 20 years and had thus become acquainted with a host of appreciative friends. For many weeks, years, months she had been a sufferer and under a doctor's care, and many times given up hope of recovery, but lingered with her associations, assisting as best she could in the details of a busy life, and it seems as the end drew nearer, that more and more of her kindly solicitude was crowded into her mind. And n the minutest details connected with her departure, her mind and thought were concentrated. The text for her funeral sermon, the songs sung, the singer and player, the pall bearers, and those who were to remain at the home were all selected and these details were carefully carried out. We might stop here, and let the lessons gathered on the occasion by those who attended the funeral services, suffice but in the closing of this beautiful book of life we believe it to be fitting that these lessons be more deeply impressed, for in the death of a Christ-like person, more good perhaps is accomplished than in their life work, for we feel that last impressions are most enduring and we are quite sure the influences set in motion in the closing up of this beautiful life, will go on down the future and unborn generations will be made the richer by the thoughtfulness and Christ-like influence of the deceased. The pall bearers were a class in Sunday school which she taught and this fact has doubtless touched them as no other influence would and future years will reveal its results. In fact the closing days of her life were crowded with anxious solicitations for those who have been most near and dear to her, and her passing always has shed a halo of Godliness and benediction on all those who were brought in contact with the closing scenes of her life. All was done that medical skill could do to restore here to health and for months, hopes and fears have ebbed and flowed until God said, "It is enough, come up higher." The community will miss her. She will be missed in the church, but most of all she will be miss in the home circle. Her spacious home, which she enjoyed for so short a time, will lack the embellishing touch of a mother and homekeeper. May the influences set at liberty by this occasion, increase and expand for the good while the years shall come and go. Rev. Cummings of the M.E. church conducted the closing service which was both instructive and comforting. She leaves a husband, four children and a father to mourn her loss, besides numerous other relatives and friends who share with the family the grief that comes sooner or later to all. However, not all are so well prepared to meet God as this one, and let us not look upon this event as the ending of a beautiful life, but rather as a separation. "For then shall we know even as also we are known." The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family in this hour of deep affliction. She was laid to rest in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, attended by a large gathering of friends.
