When Mary Wynhoff was 17, the family (then living in The Netherlands) emigrated to the USA. The Wynhoff family settled in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, Mary Wynhoff married John Henry Verfurth. The family memory holds that Mary Wynhoff and John Verfurth "came to the USA on the same boat." More probably, and according to the image of a French-language birth record, the mother of Mary Catharina Wynhoff is Dorothe Apeldorn born in Grieth on November 4, 1808. The birth record identifies the father of Dorothea Apeldorn as Jean Apeldorn, age 29, whose occupation is "batelier" (mariner, boatman) and the mother as Jacobe Simmes, age 19. Ten children were born to Mary Wynhoff and John Verfurth from 1858 to 1875. Katherine, Joanna, Mary, Henry, Dora and Theodore were born in Wisconsin. After Theodore's birth in 1863, the Verfurth family moved to Bremer County, Iowa. John Henry, Helen (Ella), a daughter who died in infancy, and Elizabeth were born in Iowa. Mary Wynhoff's husband John Verfurth died in Iowa in 1875. The 1880 census for Bremer County, Iowa, records that Mary [Wynhoff] Verfurth (age 42) heads a household which includes the following persons: Emma [Joanna] Verfurth (age 20), Henry Verfurth (age 16), Dora Verfurth (age 14), John Verfurth (age 10), Ella [Helen] Verfurth (age 8), Elizabeth Verfurth (age 4), and Dora [von Appeldorn] "Weinhoff" (age 71, mother of the head). Mary Wynhoff continued to farm in Iowa until 1888 when she moved with her children at home to Creston in Washington Territory. The children who accompanied Mary Wynhoff were probably Joanna, Henry A, Dora, Theodore, John Henry, Helen (Ella), and Elizabeth. Daughter Katherine Verfurth had married Fred Luth and daughter Mary Verfurth had been sent years before to live with Fredericka Wynhoff Look in Kankakee, Illinois. Hilda Wynona Rhodes (married Anderson), a granddaughter of Mary Wynhoff, wrote a letter to her cousin Roselle Paulissen in Kankakee, Illinois, dated January 8. The year is probably 1956 and Hilda may have been living in the northwest. Hilda relates the history that she received and recalled. "You perhaps know that Grandmother [Mary Wynhoff Verfurth] and most of the family came west in a very early day, early in the 80's I believe, at that time central Washington was not settled at all, she had the first store in the area and Uncle Henry [Henry A Verfurth] and Aunt Ella [Helen Verfurth] the first post office, of course there was no church for them to attend and no way for them to get there if there had been a church. Grandmother of course did the best she could and was very busy making a living and getting by in a new country, she was a real pioneer. Of course she and the family were Catholic but as I have just told you they had no church to attend, later on when she became sick and died [1890] there was a priest 40 or 50 miles away, but remember that was long before the age of Automobiles and very few trains, anyway her family got in touch with this priest and asked him to come and bury their mother, after questioning and learning something of the story he refused to come because she had not been attending church."
