Description	:	A great-granddaughter of Palatine immigrant and Revolutionary patriot LT John MEFFERT (1732-1796), Mary 'Catherine' was born on 21 May 1821, to John's grandson, War of 1812 veteran Jacob MEFFORD (1792-1864) of Maryland, and his first wife Eliza Jane Mary "Polly" TUCKER of North Carolina. Read More	A great-granddaughter of Palatine immigrant and Revolutionary patriot LT John MEFFERT (1732-1796), Mary 'Catherine' was born on 21 May 1821, to John's grandson, War of 1812 veteran Jacob MEFFORD (1792-1864) of Maryland, and his first wife Eliza Jane Mary "Polly" TUCKER of North Carolina. 'Catherine' was born in Lawrenceburg, which was then in Franklin County, Kentucky. She came from a somewhat litigious and contrary family as her father Jacob, and her grandfather Philip T. (1766-1733) were often involved in civil litigation and were the subjects of criminal warrants. It is presumed that she traveled north with her family to Campbell County, Kentucky where her mother succumbed to the hardships of frontier life and passed circa 1832, perhaps from cholera, or childbirth. Her father remarried in 1834. With the onset of 1840 four states then exceeded one million in population; New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia. Indiana was still part of the western frontier as the center of the nation's population continued to move slowly west, was then 16 miles south of Clarksburg, Virginia. So, Catherine was living in what was then considered as the frontier However, little is known of Catherine until she marries Stephen Howarth FINNEY (1820-1854) on 02 May 1842, in Indianapolis, a scant four months after President Tyler's daughter Elizabeth marries Nevison Walker, at the White House in Washington, DC. How Catherine and Stephen met, or when she traveled the 115 miles from Newport, Kentucky is unknown. The Finneys had nine children during the course of their 12-year marriage: Laura Ann (1843–1934), Stephen, Jr. (1844-44) who died during infancy, Theodore Lewis (1845-1908), were the first three. While many Americans were migrating westward on the Santa Fe, Oregon, Bozeman, California, and Mormon Trails Stephen and Catherine took their family south to Madison County, Alabama. Most likely via the notorious and dangerous Natchez Trace. The coming of steamboat traffic spelled the end of the dominance of the Natchez Trace and it may be that with their young children they utilized river travel when possible. Still, it was a rough journey of 325 miles from Frankfort, KY to New Market in 1846. Their daughter Cordelia Mary “Delia” (1847–1919) was born after their arrival in Alabama, during the period of the Mexican War. “Delia's” younger sister Naomi 'Alice' (ca 1849-1934) followed when the concluding news for Alabamans in 1849, was the new capitol at Mongomery burnt on December 14th — the 30th anniversary of statehood. The nation was shocked by the passing of President Zachary Taylor died on the evening of 09 Jul 1850, after serving only a year in office. Taylor was the last slaveholder to serve as president. Catherine rang in the new year by giving birth to Edgar Collinsworth (1851–1942) on 18 Jan 1851, the year that was to mark the completion of the new state capitol. Catherine witnessed the rise of Alabama's prominence on the national stage with the election of Alabama's Senator, William Rufus DeVane King, to the vice-presidency. An office he held for only 25 days after taking his oath of office, and he never exercised any powers, or performed any duties of the office. Catherine would no doubt always recall King's passing in April of 1853, because it was the same month she reportedly gave birth to her son Adolphus O'Cain, known variously as "Dolph" or "Gus." Of course, Catherine lived prior to the passage of the 19th Amendment (XIX) when women were granted the vote, but we also lack any indication of her husband Stephen's politics, we only know he was a cabinetmaker by trade. While Catherine and family lived in northern Madison County's New Market, which as late as 1880 only had a population of 144, and had a slightly stronger union sentiment to the point of considering a separate state called "Nickajack," which didn't come about. Alabama was fast becoming a hotbed of successionist sentiment, stirred-up by the "Fire-Eaters," a group of radical pro-slavery Southerners in the Antebellum South who urged the separation of Southern states into a new nation. Led in Alabama by William Lowndes Yancey, they were so radical as to propose reopening the international slave trade, which had been illegal since 1808. 2.Robert Maring 1856 [widowed] 3.
