However, the death certificate for Cordelia's son Albert Lee Holmes may now be viewed in familysearch.org. The informant of his information was given by Cordelia's daughter Joyce Goughnour, and she stated that their mother was born in Huntsville, Alabama. Cordelia's "In Memoriam" piece, which I have transcribed below, states that she was married to William M. Holmes at Oskaloosa, February 13, 1867. According to the marriage record found in ancestry.com they were married February 13, 1868. -------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Monday, August 11, 1919: Mrs. Cordelia Mary Holmes died at her home in Agency Sunday at 5 a.m., aged 72 years. She is survived by seven children, Mrs. Joicy Goughnour of Agency, Mrs. Nettie McReynolds, Mrs. Edna Johnson and Mrs. Dollie Carter of Ottumwa, James and Russell Holmes of Agency and Albert Lee who resided with his mother. Two infant sons, a daughter and husband, W.H. Holmes preceded her in death and among the survivors are sixteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Laura Collins of Halsey, Ore., and Mrs. Alice Napier of Winfield, Kan., and one brother, Edgar Finney of Eldon, also a half brother and half sister, Walter Maring of Batavia and Mrs. Nora Reno of Centerville. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Agency Christian church with Rev. John A. Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Agency Cemetery. ------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Tuesday, August 12, 1919: The funeral of Mrs. Cordelia Mary Holmes of Agency was held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Agency Christian church, with Rev. John A. Brown officiating. Interment in the Agency cemetery. ------------------------- Note: Cordelia’s “In Memoriam” article, which I have transcribed below, does not name the surviving brother Edgar Finney of Eldon, which was named in her obituary. I have transcribed the article as written. "In Memoriam," From "Ottumwa Courier," Tuesday, August 26, 1919: Cordelia Mary Finney was born January J [sic] 1847, near Huntsville, Ala., and was called to her home beyond this vale of tears August 10, 1919, at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 4 days. She was united in marriage to William M. Holmes at Oskaloosa, February 13, 1867. To this union were born ten children. Two sons and one daughter with the father preceded her in death. Seven children, Mrs. Joicy Goughnour, and James and Russell Holmes of Agency, Mrs. Nettie McReynolds and Mrs. Edna Johnson of Ottumwa, Mrs. Dollie Carter near Dahlonega, and Albert Lee Holmes who reside at home survive. There are also seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Laura Collins of Halsey, Ore., and Mrs. Alice Napier of Winfield, Kan., one half-brother and sister, Walter Maring of Batavia and Mrs. Nora Reno of Centerville, besides a number of friends and other relatives. Mrs. Holmes accepted the divine Christ early in life. Her religious life did not consist of much active public service owing to the poor condition of her health, but the thought of living close to the Master at all times and being ready to do his bidding was the chief incentive of her life. Too much can not be said of her beautiful traits of character. While there is a vacant chair and the dear voice is silenced her life was made up of such work and deeds that she has left a sweet and precious memory for her loved ones, which they esteem as their dearest possession. She was a member of the Eastern Star order.–Contributed.
