(Bischof) Sand. She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from St. Bernard's Academy (Lourdes Central Catholic) in 1938. She attended St. Joseph's Junior College in Maple Mount, Ky., and received her teaching certificate. Read More	Lincoln, Neb. — Mary Catherine (Sand) Zech, 90, of Douglas, died Feb. 21, 2011 at BryanLGH East in Lincoln. She was born on July 4, 1920 in Nebraska City to Fridolin O. and Adeline H. (Bischof) Sand. She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from St. Bernard's Academy (Lourdes Central Catholic) in 1938. She attended St. Joseph's Junior College in Maple Mount, Ky., and received her teaching certificate. She later attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education. She was an elementary teacher for 30 years. Catherine married Arthur Lowell Zech on June 11, 1942 in San Diego, Calif. She was an active member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas and St. Martin's Altar Society. She is survived by her children: Linda Kay Zech of Douglas, Mary Jo Pankoke of Lincoln, Thomas Harry Zech and wife Becky of Eagle, David Arthur Zech of Douglas, and Barbara Jean Leising and husband Steve of Roca; son-in-law Ronald Nishimura of Long Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; siblings Patricia Sand Sloan and husband Blaine of Ft. Garland, Colo., and Robert Fridolin Sand of Olympia, Wash.; sister-in-law Mary O'Grady Sand of Lincoln; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by husband Arthur L. Zech on April 13, 1999; children Julianne Adams and Gary Wynn Zech, both in 2010; brother Dr. Paul F. Sand; sisters Margaret (Peggy) Sand Nabity, Dorothy A. Sand and Jean Sand Anderson and an infant brother James R. Sand. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas with Fr. Christopher Barak as the celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Martin's Cemetery. Visitation is at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City from 12-2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25. Visitation at the church will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Douglas Library, Nebraska Children & Families Foundation or St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas.
