Read More	SLOAN, PATRICIA SAND—Patricia Sand Sloan, the second child of Fridolin and Adeline Bischof Sand, was born January 14, 1922, on the old Sand farm southeast of Nebraska City, and passed away on February 13, 2012, at Alamosa, Colo., at the age of 90 years. She attended grade school at District 32, and graduated from high school at St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City in 1939. During this time, she spent nine years studying piano, becoming an accomplished pianist. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in education in 1943. She earned her MALS degree from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. in 1974. During World War II, Pat taught art and second grade in the Amache Relocation Center of Japanese Americans near Granda, Colo. She married Blaine Sloan, of Geneva, in the Catholic Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, in September 1944. After her marriage she taught art in the Geneva Public School. Beginning in 1961, she taught nursery school, first and second grade for two years until she took over as art teacher in the Hudson River Day School, Irvington-Hudson, N.Y., remaining there until the school closed in 1973. As an artist, Pat worked with various media over the years and has exhibited her paintings in both solo and group shows in New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Colorado. She has been a member of the Associated Artists of the San Luis Valley since 1989, Gallery West, and Alamosa, Colo., had showings of her watercolors in 1990 and 1992, and her work is carried there on a permanent basis. Pat’s work is showcased in their log home in Fort Garland, Colo., which she designed and can be seen in the fox and owl carved into the newel posts, her many paintings and the stained glass windows and door. Her latest artistic focus was on colcha, a Mexican-American art-craft which uses a specific embroidery stitch that gives the appearance of tapestry when finished. Pat has used colchas as a storytelling medium, illustrating events from her childhood and her children’s lives. She was interviewed regarding her work with the colchas as part of a film that is to be shown on educational television in the future. A loving, family oriented wife and mother, she will be sorely missed by her husband, Blaine Sloan; daughter and son-in-law, DeAnne and Chris Riddle; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Sloan and Janet Winter; and Charles P. and Teressa Sloan III; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kathryn Sloan Ashby; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Recitation of the rosary followed by a memorial mass was held February 17, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Fort Garland, Colo. An urn holding Patricia’s ashes will be placed in the Sloan Mausoleum in the Geneva Public Cemetery at a later date. The Nebraska Signal March 7th, 2012 page 14.
