Description	:	Mary was born to Simon H. and Fredreka D. Hansmeier Opfer in the Ludlow area of Allamakee County, Iowa. Being the first of 11 children. On March 3, 1899 she married John Henry Simmons. To this union 6 children were born, with their 3rd child dying at age 2 in 1907 in a horse accident. When her husband died from Hopskin's in 1923, due to many things that had suddenly gone wrong for a couple of years prior to his death (story in his bio), she and the children were left deep in debt. On March 3, 1899 she married John Henry Simmons. To this union 6 children were born, with their 3rd child dying at age 2 in 1907 in a horse accident. When her husband died from Hopskin's in 1923, due to many things that had suddenly gone wrong for a couple of years prior to his death (story in his bio), she and the children were left deep in debt. For 10 years Mary her children and relatives struggled to keep the farm solvent. The family began to sell and deliver milk to Waukon residents until 1934. The model Dairy was formed in 1932. Mary was one of the first secretaries of the local D.H.I.A. followed by her son Karl after her death. She died at the young age of 59, from a heart attack, 10 years after the death of her husband. They are buried side by side as they were together in life. Their wedding photo is hidden, just need to click to see.
