Description	:	John is linked to his parents, was well to his wife and one of his sons. He was born in the Ludlow area of Iowa, one of six children to his parents, being their 3rd son. All the sons were tall ranging from 6'3" to 6'4", with their sister being about 5'11". In 1898 after the death of his father, he bought half of his parents land. Read More	John is linked to his parents, was well to his wife and one of his sons. He was born in the Ludlow area of Iowa, one of six children to his parents, being their 3rd son. All the sons were tall ranging from 6'3" to 6'4", with their sister being about 5'11". In 1898 after the death of his father, he bought half of his parents land. Our family still has copies of the papers filled on March 16, 1989. Living all of his life in Allamakee county, he married Mary Christina Opher on March 3, 1899. Around that time he had bought the family home and rest of the land. Six children were born to this union, with one son dying at age 2 in 1907 in an horse accident. 1910 census his mother is now living with he and his family, still farming the land. He must of been doing well, for they had a hired man as well as a servant at that time. After 14 years of having the farm they then bought a 196 acre farm adjacent to SW Waukon in 1913. In 1915 his mother passed away just 5 weeks before his 6th child was born. John had been the Ludlow Justice of the Peace and continued to serve the community as an officer in the County Agricultural Society which met monthly to discuss latest teachology. He was a dirctor and stockholder in the First National Bank of Waukon and New Albin. A series of tragedies occurred within a few years. The Bank failed which required stockholders to cover the deficit; 5 horses died and cows aborted calves. The family home was distroyed by fire in Feb., 1922. Then John died of Hodgkin's in 1923 at only 58 years of age. Leaving his wife and children all deeply in debt. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery, not Zalmona with his parents and child, since they transfered their church membership at sometime from Zalmona to Zion German Reformed Church, Now U.C.C.
