Locke and Miss Mamie Bishop The Catholic church was filled yesterday morning with those who went to witness the marriage of Mr. H. B. Locke, of Blue Rapids, and Miss Mamie Bishop, of this city. The ancient and beautiful ceremony of the Catholic church was performed by Rev. Herrington, Rev. Jennings, of Horton, and Rev. J. B. Staeder, O. S. B., of Severance, Kansas, and lasted over an hour. It was deeply impressive to all. The bride was attired in a beautiful costume of cream silk with orange blossoms and presented a lovely appearance. The bridegroom was dressed in black. The bridesmaids were Miss Maggie Heatherly, of Whiting and Miss Maggie Fahey, of Holton, The groomsmen were F. McDonald, of Atchison, and John Scanlin, of Holton. After the ceremony the wedding party was driven to the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Bishop, where they were tendered a sumptuous breakfast. The party left at four o’clock for Denver, followed by the good wishes of many friends. Among the invited guests from abroad were Mrs. Gib Bishop and Mrs. Sarah Greene, of Blaine; Miss Lucy Becker, of Atchison, and miss Jennie Swartz, of Buffalo, N. Y. Contributor: Joanne Scobee Morgan (46991706) --the following obituary and biographical information was provided by Find A Grave contributor, Judy McAsey Arnold: Mrs. Mary E Phillips, 82, died at the at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, Tuesday evening, January 6, 1953, following an illness of 2 days. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Mart Parks of Hiawatha; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Mrs Phillips has made her home with her daughter in Hiawatha for 18 years. Father Norbert, OSB, will celebrate requiem low mass at 9 o’clock, Thursday , January 8, at St. Ann’s Church. Interment will be held at the Catholic cemetery west of Holton. Rosary will be recited by Father Norbert at 8 o’clock this Wednesday evening, January 7, at Meek’s chapel. The Hiawatha Daily World - January 7, 1953 Mary E. Slater (Bishop) married Dr. Hinman B. Locke, a dentist, Apr. 22, 1890 in Holton, Ks and had one daughter, Mary Locke Parks. Dr. HB Locke , born abt. 1869 was shot and killed near Henderson, TX, Sept. 26, 1896. Mary E. then married Charles A. Phillips in 1899. Mary's mother died when she was 2 yrs. old. The 1875 Census shows that she lived with Hamilton and Catherine Bishop. Her last name appears as Bishop which could indicate she was adopted. --the following biographical information was provided by Find A Grave contributor, Kevin Mackey: Mary was adopted by H.P. and Catherine Bishop. The facts of which would end up before the Supreme Court of Kansas in 1914 in Phillips vs Bishop regarding the estate of Catherine Bishop.
