Johnston were held at the home of her brother, W. S. Acheson, 419 Cheyenne avenue, Friday afternoon, September 2, at 8:30 and interment was made in the Greenwood cemetery at Alliance. The services were conducted by Rev. A.J. Kearns, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Stephen Epler, pastor of the Christian church of this city. Mary E. Acheson (Mrs. J. N. Johnston) was born February 1, 1858, in Louise county, Iowa, near Columbus City, and died at her home near Alliance, Neb., August 31, 1921, at about 9 o’clock in the evening, being at the time of her death aged sixty-three years, six months and thirty days. Death came very suddenly although Mrs. Johnston had been ailing for some three or four weeks. Her condition was not considered serious as she was able to be up and about most of the time. Some days ago her condition was pronounced to be cancer of the liver, combined with a high blood pressure. At 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Mrs. Johnston suffered a fainting spell but rallied from it, and slept till about 9 o’clock in the evening, when the family was called to her bedside and in a few moments she breathed her last. Her hope was built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. She has been a member of the United Presbyterian church since early childhood and has been a true mother in Israel, imparting the spirit of her faith to all her household and to all her labors. Her life has been hid with God in Christ Jesus. Mary E. Acheson was married September 10, 1879, in Wayne county, Iowa, to John N. Johnston, who remains to mourn her loss together with seven children of this union, namely: Clyde M. Johnston, Alliance, Neb.; Mrs. B. H. Fernald, Alliance, Neb.; Melvin E Johnston, Antioch, Neb,; J. B. Johnston, Whitman, Neb.; Chester C. Johnston, Scottsbluff, Neb.; Mrs. Ethel D. Lively, Minneapolis, Minn., and Miss Grace Johnston of Alliance. Mrs. Johnston is also survived by three brothers, A. R., I. L. and W. S. Acheson, who with a host of friends mourn her going. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston moved to Box Butte county in the spring of 1886, experiencing all the vicissitudes of pioneer life in a new country. As wife and mother, Mrs. Johnston did her full share in both home and community in the work of establishing a Christian civilization in what was then an almost unsettled and an uncharted region.
