Mary Elizabeth Barnes was born October 29, 1864, at New Sharon, Iowa, to Joseph and Mary Harland Barnes. Her siblings were James, Rebecca, Martha, William, Tabitha, Lida, Sadie and Dotie. Henry and Mary were married March 5, 1884. Henry's sister Eva married Sam Sears and eventually both families went to Nebraska. The following was told to Marjorie Perkins by her mother, Eva Ralls Cooney. Henry and Mary lived near Earling, Iowa, until 1895. Their first five children – Maude, James (Jim), Joe, Eva and John – were born there. The family moved to Missouri, and in route, baby John fell from the covered wagon. He was unharmed, however, as his dress caught on something and kept him from falling under the wagon. In Missouri, they build a "clapboard" house. They paid a team of horses to have a well put down, leaving them just two ponies to farm with. They cleared land for a garden and for a field for cane, corn and wheat. They made molasses from the cane and ground the grain. They had no cattle or hogs, so they relied on squirrels and fish for meat. Mary became very ill and neighbors helped care for her, using home remedies. Her folks came from Iowa to take her and the children home with them, but she was too proud to go. Charlie was born in 1898, Paul in 1900 and Jess in 1903. Early in 1900, Henry and Joe went to Canada and were gone eight or nine months, leaving Mary and Jim to care for the family. Mary took in washing and sewing. (She made her own boys' overalls from the canvas wagon cover.) Jim worked for a neighbor in exchange for milk. They gathered all the wildberries and nuts they could find. A treat was molasses and nut candy. A few years after going to Canada, Henry went to Nebraska (probably influenced by the Sears). He liked what he saw and sent for the family. Mary and the children loaded everything on a freight car. Jim and Joe rode there to care for the animals. Mary and the other children rode in a passenger car. Jim and Joe were so happy to reach their destination that they jumped from the freight car and rolled in the green grass. That was their introduction to sandburs! Henry and Mary's first home in Nebraska was in the Madison Square Community of Loup County, just south of the present day cemetery. Life was better there. The older children worked away from home. The younger ones went to school. In 1908, the family moved to the Lone Star district, north of Taylor, where they farmed on a larger scale and fed out cattle. Carl was born in 1909. He was a healthy, happy lad, and a blessing and comfort to his mother after Henry died in 1913. Carl's life was short, however, as he was killed by lightning in 1923. After Henry's death, Mary bought a farm six miles west of Taylor, and with the help of the family and one hired carpenter, built a new house and barn. It was her last home. Maude married Chauncey Williams in March 1908; Eva married Edward Cooney in June 1912; and Jim married Mabel Ray in December 1912, leaving their mother's home. Joe (married Ruth Hall in 1918) went into farming with Jim, and Jess stayed with Jim and Mabel and went to school. That left John, Charlie, Paul and Carl at home. Charlie (married Lona Perkins in 1925) and John (married Lucy Vinnedge in 1927) went into the well business, leaving most of the farming to Paul. Paul stayed with his mother, never marrying until after her death. (Paul married Edna Roblyer in 1931). When Mary became ill with cancer, the family hired Bill and Mary Harvey to move in. They, with the help of Mary's good friend, Clara Cole, who was also a nurse, cared for Mary until her death in 1929.
