The uncertainty and mutability of life, the inevitable certainty of death and the incomprehensible decrees of the Highest Power are well illustrated in the following statement of facts: About a week ago Mrs. Mary E. Hopper and Roy Hill, wife and little son of Gilburn [sic] Hopper, were taken suddenly very sick with flux. In this condition they lay for several days, each unconscious of the critical condition of the other — wavering on the verge of the dark river of death, neither having any idea which would be the first to cross the stream — until Monday, July 3d, 1882, when the frail wife was taken from the scenes of her enjoyment to that higher sphere of existence. The interment of the wife was delayed, the condition of the little son being such that it was thought every hour would be his last, that they might accompany each other to their final abode. He wrestled with the dire enemy, Death, until Tuesday, July 4, 1882, when he yeilded [sic] to the will of Omnipotence, and his soul took its flight to rejoin and, remain inseverable upon the bosom of the loving mother that had preceded and was waiting with ineffable joy to welcome him home. Although all must admit that the decrees of the Almighty are just and right, there are many relatives, friends and acquaintances who mourn the sudden departure of the mother and son. From this sad occurrence all may learn a useful lesson and will do well to remember the axiom, "Life is uncertain and death is sure." The gay, giddy and thoughtless should pause in their wild career and ponder on it; the young should consider it seriously, for life is not a continued stream of pleasure; those who are older should reflect on the sudden mutations of life; the aged should consider it well, for they cannot long remain. All should bear in mind that "Death is sure and life is fleeting, And our hearts though stout and brave Still like muffled drums are beating Funeral marches to the grave."
