Thompson Sun News, The (Myrtle Beach, SC) - Friday, November 13, 1998 CONWAY - Mary Danner Thompson , 86, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at Kingston Nursing Center after an illness. She was born in Pelzer, a daughter of the late Rev. James Harvey and Pearl Delk Danner. She was the widow of Austin Charles Thompson Jr., who was Conway's 14th mayor. As a daughter of a Methodist minister, she lived in Union, Charleston, Mullins and Conway. She was a graduate of Conway High School. Mrs. Thompson was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Emma Sunday school class and the United Methodist Women. She worked in the preschool program for 47 years and organized and taught in the weekday kindergarten program. She was a member of the church choir for 63 years and taught classes in many area churches on the meaning and designing of Christmons, which are used in decorating church Christmas trees. Mrs. Thompson also helped design and make liturgical banners that still hang in the church today. She was a recipient of First United Methodist Service Award. She taught ceramic and china painting classes at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. She organized and directed activities at the Conway Senior Citizens Center. Later, the center's name was changed to the Mary Thompson Senior Center. She designed and made original porcelain dolls representing six historical women in Horry County. These dolls are displayed at the Horry County Museum. Mrs. Thompson was a former member of the Pilot Club; the Iris Garden Club; the Fine Arts Club; and the Porcelain Art Club. She was a charter member of Coastal Doll Club and the first president of the Ladies Golf Auxiliary at Conway Golf Club. She was named Woman of the Year in 1977 by the Conway Chamber of Commerce. She also received the American Legion Award in 1978 and the Cora Lewis Pilot Club Award. Survivors include two sons, Austin C. Thompson of Surfside Beach and Danner M. Thompson of Conway; two daughters, Mary Ann Cannon of Orangeburg and Emma Lou Johnson of Conway; a brother, John Danner of Sumter; a sister, Elizabeth D. ``Libby'' McLeod of Glen Arm, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel. The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mary Thompson Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 1075, Conway 29528, or First United Methodist Church Choir Fund, P.O. Box 58, Conway 29528.
