They settled in Douglas Township, where they spent the remaining years of their lives. They were among the first settlers in this part of the county and were here before Audubon became a town. Alfred Speas, born Feb. 23, 1860 of German and IRish descent, died Aug. 29, 1943, and Mary Elizabeth Fiscus Speas, born Feb. 21, 1866 of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, died July 19, 1952. Alfred and Mary Speas were married Sept. 29, 1885,and to this union 9 children were born: Bertha Carpenter, Clara Fiscus, Geneva Boice, Sarah Ames, Florence Burger, Walter, Blanche Kuntzweiler, Jennie Fiscus, and Harold. There were 32 grandchildren. In 1978 there are still some of the Speas family in Audubon--Harold Speas, Vernon Carpenter, and Warren Kuntzweiler."
