LYDICK Mary Elizabeth Giltner was born in Northumberland County Pennsylvania, February 24, 1843 and passed away Tuesday, August 19, 1924, at her home in Arizona on the farm where she had resided continuously for fifty eight years. She had reached the age of 81 years, 5 month, and 24 days, and is the last of the Giltner Family. In 1854 she came with her parents to Illinois where in 1860 she was married to John W Strange who on November 13, 1863, died from wounds received at the battle front while in defense of his country. To them was born one daughter, Wilhelmina, Mrs John T Show of Tekamah who survives her mother. In 1864, with her little daughter, she came to Burt County with her parents the journey being made in a covered wagon, she and a younger sister assisting in driving the cattle and sheep most of the way. On February 22, 1866, she was married to the late Hiram C Lydick who predeceased her on August 17, 1902, and to them were born William A who resides at Eugene, Oregon, Cora J at home, Walter B, Alvin, Samuel J, James W, Rose M, of San Francisco, Calif., H. C., and Jonathan J and one grandchild, Len Nesbit Lydick, now residing in Omaha, who when a baby was taken into this home, and to whom she poured out a wealth of motherly love. All of these, with Mrs. Show, and 29 grand children, and 7 great grandchildren survive and mourn the passing of a wonderful and most devoted mother. One child died in infancy, Lillie Myrtle at 20 months, on June 7, 1886. Mrs Lydick with her husband were true pioneers of this Arizona settlement, for they carved out a home which has ever been one of the social centers throughout these long years where hospitality and kindliness were always freely given. To every commendable enterprise they always gave freely of their time and strength and financial assistance. In 1864 she united with the Baptist church, but after the founding of the community Methodist church at Arizona Center she and her family have always helped materially in all it’s work. In the community in which she lived, the children of tender years were her special delight, and aside from her own large family circle she always manifested a strong maternal interest in others. Her disposition was to give freely of her store house of love and devotion and Mrs Lydick’s removal by death, is mourned by a wonderfully large circle of friends of both young and old. Particularly is she mourned by some very elderly men and women, whose age is like hers, and who have lived many years in close companionship and who will feel most keenly this loss of a godly friend and neighbor.
