Influenza was the cause of death. Mary Elizabeth Hawthorn was born at Hagerstown, Md. November 4, 1849. She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hawthorn former resident of Center Township. When five years of age, the family moved westward, locating in Illinois. A few years later they emigrated still further westward across the prairies of Iowa in a covered wagon drawn by an ox team and settled at Smithland in 1856. Endured Hardships Here all the privation, dangers and hardships of early pioneer life were endured, chief among which was dread of the Indians who were continually on the war path through Minnesota and northern Iowa, threatening at times to invade the country further south. Her early education was obtained at Smithland, but on account of the distance from school the family finally moved to Ida Grove. After a number of years another move was made, the family finally locating in Center Township, Monona County. Finishing her studies, Elizabeth Hawthorn was given a certificate and became one of the first school teachers of Monona County. She was married to Marion Bouslaugh, December 24, 1874. They at once settled on the old homestead where the remainder of her life was spent. Possessed Courage Mrs. Bouslaugh became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1898. The outstanding points of her character were preservation, integrity and indomitable courage. She was a women loved by the entire neighborhood. Besides her husband those who most deeply mourn her death are two sons and four daughters. The sons are: Dr. E. W. Bouslaugh of Cedar Falls, Ia. And C. H, Bouslaugh of Cottage Grove, Ore. The daughters, Virginia Rawlings, Cora Ward, ay Smith and Pearl Mann, all live near Castana. Bion Bouslaugh, eldest son, died two years ago. Two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Wiley and Mrs. Ella Carhart and three brothers, Alburtus, C.H. and D. H. Hawthorn, survive. Prof. Horace B Hawthorn, of Iowa State College, Ames, delivered the eulogistic address at the funeral service held in the Center Community Church Tuesday afternoon.
