Mary E. Dwiggins. Mary E. Ives, daughter of Stephen and Sarah Ives, was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, March 5, 1841, and died at the late home in Tipton, Iowa, Feb. 18, 1926, aged 84 years, 11 months and 13 days. The family moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio, when a child and in 1885, when she was 14 years of age, to Cedar county, Iowa. Thus for 71 years this community has felt the influence of her life upon it. She was united in marriage with Solomon Leabhart, Feb. 1858, ad they made their home in West Liberty until the time of his death July, 1862. One son was born to them, William O. Leabhart of Tipton, Iowa. December 14, 1863, she was united in marriage with James Dwiggins. They purchased and developed the stone mill property where they lived until Dec. 14, 1868, when they moved to the farm 3 miles west of Tipton, where they lived until 1902, when they moved to the Tipton home, where Mr. Dwiggins died June 22, 1903. One son Charles C. was born to them July 3, 1865, who died Oct. 4, 1884. They rose above that sorrow and lived to be a comfort to others. Mrs. Dwiggins has lived through the pioneer days of Cedar county and has seen it develop to its present condition of prosperity. Her father built and operated a woolen mill on the site of the old stone mill south west of Tipton. Her first husband was the first man to be buried in the Masonic cemetery. She had crossed the Mississippi river before the railroad, and has seen the prairie give place to the fine farms. She attended the Nestlerode schools, the first graded school to be opened west of the Mississippi. She has been from early life a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and has been faithful in attendance to its services as long as her health would permit. She was of a cheerful, loving disposition, and endeared herself to the hearts of many friends. She will be greatly missed in the home where Mr. and Mrs. Leabhart cared for her tenderly until the end, which came peacefully Thursday evening. There remains to mourn her departure and to cherish her memory, one son, William O. Leabhart, of Tipton, Iowa, one grandson, Charles H. Leabhart, of Tipton; one great-grandson, one sister, Mrs. Justin Keller, of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Mr. John Ives, of Boulder, Colorado; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial was made in Masonic cemetery. Contributor: daisy (48425018) •
