Mrs. Elizabeth Schwartz Obiutary Excelsior Newspaper Blakesburg, Wapello Co., Iowa MRS. ELIZABETH SCHWARTZ, daughter of, Jacob and Elizabeth Kline, was born in Schmet Weiller, German, November 26, 1836. At the age of sixteen, she with her parents sailed for America on a 3-mast sail ship, the Admiral, landing in New York December 2, 1852, after a 33 day voyage. Her parents later moved by wagon and canal boat to Taylorsville, Ohio, where she married to Louis Schwartz Feb. 25, 1855. Eleven children were born to this union---Mrs. Louisa Harris of Kellerton, Mrs. Catherine LEONARD, Mrs. Malinda SALES, Mrs.. Matilda HUFF and Chas. SCHWARTZ of Ottumwa. In 1868 the family moved to Davis county, Iowa, locating in the Hopewell community. Mrs. SCHWARTZ passed awat at thome of her daughter, Mrs. HUFF July 22, 1926, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 28 days. At the age of 14 she confessed her fith in her Savior and united with with the Presby-terian church in German and lived in the faith of her Master until he called her home. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother; kind and considerate of her family and friends and her aim was to make others happy and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Besides the five children she leaves a sister, Mrs. John WOLF and a brother, Jake at Zanesville, Ohio, also 50 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren and 16 great, great grandchildren. Her companion and six of children preceded her in death. The names of the deceased children are, Martha, Mary, Louie and Harry, also Mrs. Elizabeth HANNAH and Mrs. Lena GLOSSER. Funeral service was held at the Hopewell Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o"clock in charge of Rev. Luth W. CHILDS of Ottumwa. Those acting as pall bearers were John and Lewis GLOSSER, Chas. HANNAH, Lee STOCKER, Frank LATHROP and Tom HUFF. The body was laid to rest amidst banks of flowers in the Hopewell cemetery. May God bless you The Children Chicago-Related History of Our Family Great Great Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Kline Schwartz and her husband Ludwig lived outside of Chicago for a time in the 1860's. They saw Lincoln's funeral train when it passed through Chicago and she remembered that everyone wore black. She was a servant for the Sturges and Buckingham families. The Buckingham brothers were born in Zanesville, Ohio, which is where some of the Schwarz children, including great grandmother, Lena, was born. Sturges, Buckingham & Co. This grain elevator company was founded in 1855 by Solomon Sturges and his brothers-in-law C.P. Buckingham and Alvah Buckingham. By 1857, they owned 120-foot elevators at the Illinois Central Railroad depot. During the Civil War, their two elevators had a capacity of 700,000 bushels each, which made Sturges Buckingham & Co. the city's leading grain warehousing firm. In 1865, John Buckingham and Ebenezer Buckingham took over management of the elevators. By 1873, the Buckinghams' elevators had a capacity of nearly 2.9 million bushels of grain. The partnership ended with death of John Buckingham in 1881. Buckingham Fountain was built in 1927 by Kate Sturges Buckingham in memory of her brother. Family made its fortune in grain elevators and banking. The story about the Art Institute lions being from the Buckingham family mansion is not true. They were donated by Mrs. Marshall Field for the 1893 World's Fair. Ludwig and Elizabeth Schwartz moved to Davis Co., IA in 1868. Joy-2/07 Mary Elizabeth and Ludwig Schwartz moved to Iowa to Davis County in 1868, settling on a farm near Ash Grove. There were two geese in the barnyard and there was hazelnut trees on the farm. Ludwig would whittle as he talked. He had a long beard. Elizabeth wore her hair parted in the middle, and drawn back in a know on back of her head. She always wore an apron. Her sister Charlotte (Charlotta) and her husband John Wolfe also moved to Davis County (don't know when but before 1870). Longevity: Mary Elizabeth Kline Schwartz lived to be 90, her sister Charlotte Kline Wolfe to 105 and Charlotte's daughter, Clara Jane Cassill to 104.
