Description	:	Mrs. Mary White Fort Madison – Mrs. Mary Blair White, 83, died in Sacred Heart Hospital at 4:30 p.m. July 22. Death terminated a four month illness. A resident of Fort Madison since 1890, Mrs. White lived at 1217 Thirty-seventh street. She was born in Warren County, Illinois, on Jan. 4, 1872, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Means. A resident of Fort Madison since 1890, Mrs. White lived at 1217 Thirty-seventh street. She was born in Warren County, Illinois, on Jan. 4, 1872, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Means. She was married to O. E. Blair at Monmouth, Ill. in 1889. Blair died April 18,1922 and on July 4, 1923 she was married to James F. White. They were married at Fort Madison. White died June 22, 1954. Six sons and a daughter survive; George Blair, East Moline, Ill; Allen Blair, Sterling, Ill.; William Blair and Mrs. Helen Robinson, both of Kewanee, Ill; Lesley Blair, Pocahontas, and Harry and Theodore Blair, both of Fort Madison. Also surviving are three brothers and a sister; C. Means, Peoria, Ill., O. Means, Seattle Wash. and A Means, and Mrs. Alice Tracey, both of Monmouth, 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ort, of Fort Madison, died in March of 1954. Two brothers and three sisters also died previously. Last rites will be held at Santa Fe Methodist church, of which Mrs. White was a member, at 2:30 Monday afternoon. The Rev. Lawrence E. Jones will officiate and burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Growing up in the 1930's, 1940's and beyond, my wife took it for granted that her grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Blair White was married to her uncle Jim – James Franklin White. Uncle Jim was in fact her uncle, by marriage, and also her step grandfather. How did this come about? Oscar E. Blair (my wife's biological grandfather) was born on October 11, 1866 and married my wife's grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Means, on November 19, 1889. Oscar and Mary had nine children – the youngest of whom (Helen) was my wife's mother. Oscar's sister Susan Adeline Blair who was born on April 9, 1865, married James F. White on October 8, 1884 and they had seven children. The two families lived in fairly close proximity. Sadly, the brother and sister, Oscar and Susan, both died in 1922. Oscar died April 21, 1922 and his sister, Susan died November 29, 1922. On July 4, 1923 the widower, James White and the widow, Mary Blair, were married and made their home in Fort Madison, IA until the time of their demise. Even though Jim and Mary were married 30 years, upon their deaths each was burried beside their first spouse.
